The Quantum guy? Not sure I'm crazy about these news ... Quantum opened last week in Germany and reactions haven't exactly been enthusiastic.

"... when they pitched it to me, it reminded me of the paranoid conspiracy films of the '70s like 'All the President's Men ...
Not sure what he means by that. I hope he's read or will read the book?

The one thing I've been reading is that it's lacking in humor.

Well, the frame in the book *is* about how the various authorities
failed to step up and curb the plague while it might have still been controlled. The series of interviews is purported to be a study into what happened and how it could be prevented from happening again. And in the end, they refused to accept it and the interviewer had to publish it alone.

Most complaints I've heard relate to the story and the plot; a lot of action scenes with little meaning or context (which could be disastrous if it happened to WWZ). Pretty much in line with what Roger Ebert wrote. Plus, people said it was tedious, even at 106 minutes. But all of this is second-hand, I haven't seen it (and don't intend to).

True, but I took it more as covering up incompetence, it's not quite what I would consider a conspiracy.

World War Z has a director

Marc Foster, the director of the hottest movie out there - Quantum of Solace will be directing WWZ. (Screenplay by JMS)

This is very cool news. For those unfamiliar with WWZ or JMS' involvement I refer to an AICN article on this http://www.aintitcool.com/node/36168

          Cheers,

          Mac.

Thanks, Macbeth. I'm going to move this down to our brand new Movie Forum. DougO started it a week or so ago since JMS has so many film projects going.

Personally, I think this is a great choice. I think the key to World War Z (which JMS really picked up on in his screenplay) are all the different stories and character moments, which is something that Forster is really good at.

Funnily enough, I just interviewed Forster a few weeks ago about Bond when he was in New York, and I found him a very intelligent and sensitive guy. We got to talking about how my wife and I were big fans of Finding Neverland, but I just wish at the time he would have mentioned what he was working on next, as I would have loved to talk to him about 'Z.'

Found a post by JMS about the announcement on the newsgroup:

I know, I read that here Jan. It's was just the first time I had seen it, so I was commenting on the utter foolishness of such a statement in any case.

I just saw it (no Star Trek trailer, sonofabitch) and it was nearly as good as Casino Royale. Like Nazzarro said, it's very low on humor (as was Casino Royale) and yeah, the movie is front-loaded with a bit too many action set pieces, but the story picks up a better rhythm in the second half. The villain, and his plot, are both kind of weak, but Le Sheef (spelling phonetically, thank you) in Casino Royal, with his bleeding grey eyeball was just plain goofy.

If not for following Casino Royale, this film probably would have gotten accolades for reviving the franchise because everything, as they say, is relative.

Well, I guess it's mostly that my dreams of Fincher or Cuaron directing it have been crushed ...

I'm not too fond of the new approach to Bond, but Forster's previous movies include at least two absolutely masterful movies: Stay and Stranger Than Fiction. So I think this is excellent news.

I would like to see the Battle of Yonkers set up so that everybody in the audience finally gets the idea that the only thing that puts down a zombie is a headshot.
Hopefully, JMS took a wargamer's mindset in explaining how "African Rabies" spread so fast (Infected Chinese businessmen visiting Africa, Las Vegas, and Atlantic City anybody?).

                            Welcome, Coelacanth1938!

I'm not a gamer. Can you explain to me what you mean by 'a wargamer's mindset'? I'm not sure that it really needs much explanation that couldn't be covered in a few lines of dialogue, does it?

Marc Forster says the WWZ script still needs a lot of development, so we will have to wait a little while longer... in the meanwhile he is directing another film.

                                I would disagree with Forster.
