  • Joe and Carl Sagan

We started to watch the new Cosmos-tv series the other day and I was reminded of how much of Sagans words from the original Cosmos echoed in Babylon 5. Especially in the Minbari and Foundationist philosophies and the notion of us being star stuff.

Have Joe talked about Carl Sagan anywhere? He seem to have been very inspired by him. (Like almost everyone how were interested in space in the 70's.)

A search of the archives only comes up with a couple of mentions of him. I'd be surprised if he wasn't familiar with Sagan but I've got a vague memory of his (JMS) saying that the 'star stuff' concept had been around long before Sagan made it popular. Can't seem to find the reference, though, so I may be mistaken.

Kathryn M. Drennan, writer of By Any Means Necessary and JMS's then-wife, also worked on Cosmos. B5 certainly comes out of the same political and philosophical milieu.

(I named a character in The Talos Principle who represents such a humanist point of view Alexandra Drennan as an oblique nod at both B5 and Cosmos.)

Oh wow, I have yet to play The Talos Principle but I didn't realize we have one of its writers on board! Very cool
My posts are my own opinion and do not represent JMSNews.com's opinions or views. As it's written under my handle I'm "just a fan".

I did not know that. That was an interesting piece of the puzzle
Cosmos is such a great show. Listening to Sagans voice is a comfy-blanket for the soul.
