  • Peter David Suffers a Stroke

    Just found on his webpage/blog:

    I have had a Stroke

We were on vacation in Florida when I lost control of the right side of my body. I cannot see properly and I cannot move my right arm or leg. We are currently getting the extent of the damage sorted out and will report as further details become clarified.

    PAD
IIRC from one of Kathlee David's blog entries, the Davids were going to visit one of Peter's daughters in Jacksonville and then come to Disney.

If I hear more, I'll post it.

    Wow, he can't do that - he's only 56!

I've heard time is critical for stroke victims and it sounds like he's on top of it. Speedy recovery PAD!

Here's a post from Harlan Ellison after his having talked to Katleen David:

      PETER DAVID IN HOSPITAL

Yes, I know, since Peter posted on his blog, that many of you have been apprised that my dearest friend had a stroke on his right side, while vacationing with Kathleen and Ariel, his daughter, at Disneyworld in Florida. He apparently began with double-vision and, later last night, his right leg went out. At moment, he's resting easily, with apparently excellent medical attention. Spoke to Kathleen a few minutes ago; I'm sure Peter himself will let those of us who wait helplessly but hopefully, if there is anything for us to do but look on prepared to assist.

I'm sorry to hear this. I've enjoyed his work when I've run across it.

Here's an update post from his wife Kathleen David:

As stated yesterday on his web log, Peter had a stroke. So we are at the beginning of what is going to be a long road. We have a diagnosis, which is a small stroke in the Pons section of his brain. Now we have to figure out where we go from here and how

It sounds like everything came on gradually. FWIW, both the hospitals where he's gotten (and is getting) care have excellent reputations.

For folks wondering how they can help, Kathleen David has some suggestions. Possibly more direct ways later but this is a good start and you get something for yourself, too.

But first the daily Peter David Update: He was able with assistance to get up and sit in a chair where he spent most of the day. He worked with his various ...

Personal plug: I enjoyed the Camelot Papers although it's more serious than the blurb and cover would lead you to believe.

Hoping the Fan community can really help them out here.

Excellent news on Peter David's progress:

That is the big news from yesterday. He stood up and with assistance he took his first steps since this whole thing started. They were few and we had to con ...

Also, I'll be sure to post when they get a 'Donate' button up on their site for anybody who'd like to leave something in the tip jar to help defray their sure-to-be-horrendous expenses.

Kathleen has been posting regular updates, although with Peter moving on to a rehab facility and Kathleen going back to New York, regular updates may be less frequent (although it sounds like Peter is progressing well and might start doing some himself).

Was looking forward to having him at Phoenix Comicon this year. Whether he will recover enough to do so is still to be determined.

I brought him out for a LepreCon about ten years ago and he also came out for the Nebula Awards where Harlan was given the Grand Master Award in 2006. He and Harlan hung out in the hotel lobby pretty late on Friday night chatting with fans and each other.

Peter seems to be settling in at the rehab facility and his wife Kathleen and their daughter Caroline are going home today.

I have been taking a Tai Chi class for a while now. It has helped balance, joints, and body awareness. One of the things I have learned is how important it ...

I think it's truly awesome how she kept the fans posted throughout this whole ordeal.
