  • JMS at San Diego Comic-Con 2013

SDCC has a new website and I just found this while paging through it:

    J. Michael Straczynski
Writer, Superman: Earth One, Before Watchmen

    J. Michael Straczynski is the JMS behind Studio JMS, a multimedia ministudio launched at last year's Comic-Con International. (He is not, however, the JMS behind “Just My Size,” a company that sells ladies' undergarments, and you should ignore all rumors to the contrary.) He has written nearly 400 comics, over 300 television episodes, and four movies, picking up the Eisner, Hugo, and Ray Bradbury Awards along the way. He also has a new line of thongs and bikini briefs coming out in the fall. No, wait . .
Comic-Con is July 18-21 this year with Preview Night on July 17 (which also happens to be JMS' birthday.

For those thinking of attending SDCC this year, tickets go on sale Feb. 16. If you're considering it at all, read this *now* because there are things you need to do first.

It all comes down to this. In just two short weeks, the general public will finally get a shot at badges for Comic-Con 2013. Comic-Con International made the announcement this afternoon that badge registration for this year’s con will go on sale Saturday, February 16 at 12 PM ET / 9AM PT. That means in … Save The Date! SDCC Badge Registration is February 16! Read More »

Yeah, it's complicated. But I've already got mine!

I thought *last* year was the last year you were going... Oh Jan..
          Alan
"There are no good wars. War is always the worst possible way to resolve differences. It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

No, I was just afraid it might be.

See, used to be you could buy your ticket for the next year while you were at the current year con. Now it's online only but there are two sales periods. First was for folks who'd been there last year, a certain percentage of the tickets were released to us not too long after the con. This next sale will be for the balance and open to everybody. But the restrictions are complex with everybody needing a Member ID and only being allowed to buy so many (and you've got to have each of *their* member IDs) and what happens if you only got a couple of days in the last sale but want to upgrade to the full weekend...

Attending SDCC is serious business, not to be attempted by the faint of heart. Thankfully I've got my membership, airfare and accomodations all taken care of already.

First bit of scheduling info from JMS:

That's prime time, so I foresee some room camping in my future. I don't imagine he'll be able to top last year, though!

And just a short time ago:

This is good. It means that we don't have to take off running after his spotlight panel as sometimes happens. It's particularly long, too. I asked it that's where/when the exclusive SIDEKICK issues will be distributed.

                ETA: And the answer is:

It's taking me a while to get used to the idea of there being a table for Joe's Comics. Will have to scope it out as more info becomes available. I'm hoping that it won't be a drawing tickets situation, but seeing as its Comic-con, that might be a fair way to do it.

I asked JMS if Sense8 might be showing up at SDCC this year:

Wonder if I'll have to line up at 3AM next year to get into Hall H for a presentation. That's both a cool and a terrifying notion.

And....here's where it gets difficult! The autographing schedule isn't up yet but JMS said it would be Saturday from 2:30-4:30. Okay, that's do-able. But then:

                    Saturday, July 20 ò 4:30pm - 5:30pm

                    What's Next at Image Comics
Image Comics dropped some huge announcements earlier this month at their Image Expo media event. Now's your chance to get up close and personal with the creators and titles added to the increasingly legendary Image catalogue! Join Image publisher Eric Stephenson and a panel of talent to find out what the country's largest independent comics publisher has in store for the rest of 2013, 2014 and beyond. Moderated by Eric Stephenson and featuring panelists Ed Brubaker, J. Michael Straczynski, and Matt Fraction.

                    Saturday July 20, 2013 4:30pm - 5:30pm
                    Room 6DE
                    ...and immediately after:

                    Saturday, July 20 ò 5:30pm - 6:30pm

                    Spotlight on J. Michael Straczynski

Just when we thought we'd gotten rid of him once and for all, Comic-Con special guest J. Michael Straczynski created Studio JMS and its subsidiary Joe's Comics, via Image, which debuted Ten Grand this past May and will be launching a special variant edition right here at SDCC. We consider this the worst kind of retribution for our prior panel descriptions and are considering our next move. This may lead to fisticuffs. Oh, yeah, and he writes movies and TV and stuff like that. Whatever.

                    Saturday July 20, 2013 5:30pm - 6:30pm
                    Room 7AB
(I do love it when he's irreverent in his descriptions. I missed it a little last year)

Must find out what's in 7AB beforehand to decide if I'll have to miss the Image panel. Oh, the agony of convention panel decisions!!!

                      And now Sunday is posted:

                      Sunday, July 21 ò 2:45pm - 3:45pm

                      Joe's Comics' Sidekick

                      J. Michael Straczynski, Studio JMS CEO Patricia Tallman, editor Phil Smith, and other luminaries discuss Joe's Comics, the new creator-owned imprint from Image. They will be debuting their new title, Sidekick, here at SDCC and providing a glimpse of additional projects coming soon from Joe's Comics.

                      Sunday July 21, 2013 2:45pm - 3:45pm
                      Room 5AB

Just saw a copy of the Quick Guide and it shows that JMS' table in Artist Alley is going to be II-16 which looks to be a pretty good location for lines as it's on an aisle and there's some room for lines to form.

As posted down in the Comics forum, JMS has said that there will be 500 each of the SDCC exclusives for sale at his table. Hopefully he'll let us know what hours that table will be manned.
