Wow, that was a fun event. For those of you that were not able to make it to Costa Mesa to see/hear Joe's talk I'll give you a synopsis.
The day started off with Manny Pacheco the author of "Forgotten Hollywood - Forgotten History" talking about his book and how he came to write it. He offered some very interesting anecdotes about Hollywood through the years. It was done in a Q&A format with O.C. register writer Gary Lycan. and the hoist who's name I've forgotten.
It was interesting to hear about sone of the older history and how many came to write the book.
After that, it was JMS's turn. They started off with a "Sizzle Reel" highlighting Joe's career. When the B5 clip came on there was a cheer heard though out the theater.
Joe came on stage and joked about how a sizzle reel should be 2 minutes long at most and if you are showcasing a writer some dialog would be nice.
There was then a similar Q&A with Joe about his career and Joe told some funny stories as well as some moving stories about a film that is in Pre-production called the "Flickering Light". I think he is going to direct that one.
One of the best anecdotes was about his relationship with Rod Serling going back to when he was a child in school and Rod read several of his short stories and told Joe he had talent. It progressed from there to his admiration for Serling's way with words and how when he got to rewrite an old unfinished Serling episode for the new TZ how Rod's widow Carol was very supportive of the final product.
After an hour or so came the audience Q&A. Many of the questions deal with Writing and how the business and worked (after all it was a meeting of the Orange County Screenwriter's Assoc.).
I got to ask a question suggested by my son about why so much of his writing is about building alliances. I have a video of the answer I'll be posting on my facebook page along with a couple of pictures that I got.
One B5 item of interest that Joe did address, is that with 2013 coming up (the 20th anniversary of B5) it would be a good time to do a movie. He has a story in mind, and apparently WB is willing to put the money out to do a feature film right (approx 100 million). But as he did say he would have to have a script ready by 2011, shoot in 2012 for a 2013 release so he is already behind schedule.
There was alot more but I'll let Jan cover some of that. BTW I got to meet the other JMS and the Cafe Press crew. All of them were very cool. Joe signed all my stuff (10 items including the Snow White Script at which I got a withering look).
I also took the Straczinski Staff group picture after the event.
All in all it was a great event, I just wish I was a better storyteller.
