  • Report from JMS's Talk in Orange County

Wow, that was a fun event. For those of you that were not able to make it to Costa Mesa to see/hear Joe's talk I'll give you a synopsis.

The day started off with Manny Pacheco the author of "Forgotten Hollywood - Forgotten History" talking about his book and how he came to write it. He offered some very interesting anecdotes about Hollywood through the years. It was done in a Q&A format with O.C. register writer Gary Lycan. and the hoist who's name I've forgotten.

It was interesting to hear about sone of the older history and how many came to write the book.

After that, it was JMS's turn. They started off with a "Sizzle Reel" highlighting Joe's career. When the B5 clip came on there was a cheer heard though out the theater.

Joe came on stage and joked about how a sizzle reel should be 2 minutes long at most and if you are showcasing a writer some dialog would be nice.

There was then a similar Q&A with Joe about his career and Joe told some funny stories as well as some moving stories about a film that is in Pre-production called the "Flickering Light". I think he is going to direct that one.

One of the best anecdotes was about his relationship with Rod Serling going back to when he was a child in school and Rod read several of his short stories and told Joe he had talent. It progressed from there to his admiration for Serling's way with words and how when he got to rewrite an old unfinished Serling episode for the new TZ how Rod's widow Carol was very supportive of the final product.

After an hour or so came the audience Q&A. Many of the questions deal with Writing and how the business and worked (after all it was a meeting of the Orange County Screenwriter's Assoc.).

I got to ask a question suggested by my son about why so much of his writing is about building alliances. I have a video of the answer I'll be posting on my facebook page along with a couple of pictures that I got.

One B5 item of interest that Joe did address, is that with 2013 coming up (the 20th anniversary of B5) it would be a good time to do a movie. He has a story in mind, and apparently WB is willing to put the money out to do a feature film right (approx 100 million). But as he did say he would have to have a script ready by 2011, shoot in 2012 for a 2013 release so he is already behind schedule.

There was alot more but I'll let Jan cover some of that. BTW I got to meet the other JMS and the Cafe Press crew. All of them were very cool. Joe signed all my stuff (10 items including the Snow White Script at which I got a withering look).

I also took the Straczinski Staff group picture after the event.

All in all it was a great event, I just wish I was a better storyteller.
All generalizations are false, including this one.

I'll see if there's anything to add to AstroBoy's excellent synopsis after I've checked the tape. I'll do what I can do about getting at least the B5 movie part transcribed. Sadly, I expect the recording to be hard to hear since the sound at the theater left something to be desired.

Many thanks to AstroBoy for allowing himself to be drafted as unpaid, though not unappreciated, photographer. It was great to meet you!

You summed up JMS's talk nicely. I'm glad to hear of a movie, I hope he can make the time to write a script. All the other stuff he's doing can wait, can't it?

I always appreciate the reports from the people fortunate enought to attend. Thanks AstroBoy!

It will really be great if he can make a movie that he wants. I will be cautiously optimistic.

It was funny, first off, Joe is very self deprecating, and very funny to hear live.

2nd when he was talking about what it was like to go to Cannes, he had mentioned that he went from obscurity to A-list writer overnight and that all these industry people were wondering where the hell he came from. Was this his first script... etc.... etc...

Warner asked him what he would need to make a B5 movie and he replied 100 million. dead silence... "We'll get back to you.". Changeling comes out.... "You want 100 Million no problem." You want 25 million to do this small independant film we have a problem..."

                Gotta love Hollywood.

BTW the reason it was free to hear him is we could not afford it if he were to keep silent.

One writer in the audience asked about how you get your material in front of the powers that be on a show. Write for the actors was the reply. Write something for the 2nd and 3rd tier characters who want more screen time and that is an easy way of getting it sold.

Joe also told a funny story about when he was trying to get on "Jake and the Fatman". He wrote a story in which William Conrad's character was kidnapped and tied to a chair for the entire episode on the assumption that Conrad was a big heavy guy who probably doesn't like to walk too much. The producers read it and said this is great; "William hates walking this will be a nice a break for him.". This was on a Tuesday. On that Friday he was hired on staff.

One of the most important things I had forgotten to mention was that I got all of the Cafe press staff to sign my Crusade interview book.

More details on the B5 film and Flickering Light also would be appreciated. Did he get into specifics about what the FL story is about, other than what we know already?

Flickering Light - per IMDb, concentration camp prisoners are taken out for an unusual task. JMS mentioned a particular filmmaker who made a lot of propaganda films for the Third Reich and that she was making a film that needed ethnic-looking people for a film she was making that was ostensibly set in Spain (? I think it was Spain). Since there weren't many of those free at the time, she got permission to use prisoners. He said that there's a love story involved.

The budget for FL is 25 million dollars and they've gotten a lot of the financing. They're in talks with some actors and he wasn't able to name names.

B5 film: As AstroBoy mentioned, JMS has told WB that he's got a 100 million dollar budget in mind for the film and they've told him to let them know when he's ready to discuss specifics. He does have a story in mind.

One thing he mentioned is that it's sometimes easier to get approval for 100 million than it is for 25 million.

                      Jan

ETA: JMS also mentioned that he'll be turning in the latest draft of Lensman shortly and he described a fight scene in space to illustrate the scope of it.

One of these days I hope to receive the "withering look."

That should read the "tyrany of reasonable voices". The voice of reason that wants to keep you from hurt or disappointment so they tell you not to try; they tell you to surrender your dreams.

And to be complete, the last quote of that paragraph, I think, should read "If you *fall* off a cliff, you might as well try to fly, you've got nothing to lose". Sounds familiar, I think so, but I might be wrong.
