  • J. Michael Straczynski: the Julius Schwartz Lecture Series

Check out http://henryjenkins.org/2008/12/from...j_michael.html and see some of Neil Gaiman's interview plus preparations for JMS to appear this year (in May) and the screening series there.
This year's speaker is another transmedia creator รป J. Michael Straczynski. Straczynski is best known for his role as the creator of the cult science fiction serial Babylon 5 and its various spin-off films and series ... This January, CMS will be hosting a screening series some key episodes from his television work, intended to revive awareness of the extraordinary contributions Straczynski has made to the evolution of American television.

Cool news. As a long time comic fan, It makes me feel good to know that Julie is being remembered. Secondly, they talk about selling a DVD with Neil Gaiman's appearance. Hopefully they will do the same with jms.

Yeah, well, the rent is cheap, the pay is decent and I get to make my own hours.

I'll definitely be keeping a watch on it

There's a very interesting introduction on JMS and B5 at the bottom of that link as well. Definitely worth reading!

JMS confirmed the other day that he's still planning on doing the Julius Schwartz Lecture at MIT in May. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at the school and after tomorrow at a couple of Boston-area comic stores.

I'll be there. And I'd like to thank Matt at Comicopia for helping me get a ticket when the folks at MIT were less than helpful. Anybody else in the area likely to make it?

I don't suppose it would hurt to email and ask. The guy I dealt with was really nice. Hard to believe that they've got such prominent speakers as JMS and Neil Gaiman and no provisions for out-of town people to get tickets. But then, I don't know how many seats are available, either.

Perhaps it's something that they want to generally keep internal within the school. Perhaps it's viewed as a perk for being a member of the school community.

Will you be recording Ms. Schroeder? Regardless, could you pickup info on how to get a hold of the dvd of the event if such a thing is available? Many thanks.

Yes, I'll record unless instructed not to. As for the DVD, I'll try. I gather that the DVDs of Neil Gaiman's talk weren't available until several months later. And again, only via som comic stores in the area.

ETA: In the meantime, here's an undated speech that JMS did for MIT once before.

For any other out-of-towners like me, I heard from James at http://hubcomics.com/ and he said it would be fine to contact him for tickets. He'll either hold them for you or take credit card info and mail them. His contact is [email protected]

Boston's got some nice people in their comic shops!

Thanks for the link. Great speech (I am guessing from 1998, given that he appears to be in the last year of B5).

I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone .. our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit .. that the part of me that is going .. will very much miss the part of you that is staying.

From MIT's Julius Schwartz lecture website

                          Tickets
Tickets ($10) to the 2009 Julius Schwartz lecture are now available.

The event is open to the public and all interested parties are welcomed to attend.

Seating is typically limited and all tickets are general admission, so it is advised that attendees arrive to the event early.

We are planning to have video screens erected onstage that will be showing the lecturers, and a sound system in place that will enable the lecture to be heard from the rear of the auditorium, so even attendees arriving close to the start of the lecture should be able to enjoy it.

A DVD of the inaugural Julius Schwartz Lecture featuring Neil Gaiman is now available, exclusively through New England Comics.
