  • JMS at LosCon

    FYI,

Joe is listed as a participant at LosCon 35 coming up in a couple of weeks. He's not been at LosCon for a few years. They are still working on programming panels so they don't have that schedule finalized yet. Once they post it, I'll let people here know.

Yeah, well, the rent is cheap, the pay is decent and I get to make my own hours.

Alas, not me this time. I've been out to the West coast three times this year already and it's just too short notice this time. Which means it's almost inevitable that he'll announce 3 movies and 2 tv series...

Don't mean to be rude, but in that case: could you please really stay away, Jan?

(You know I am just teasing, right?)

More importantly, who's going to collect the autograph money now?

              LosCon Panels

The panel schedules finally are up.

              http://www.loscon.org/35/2008/01/02/panel-schedule-2/

No spotlight panel, Joe is doing a few discussion panels.

Here's what Joe is scheduled for:

              Friday
1:45 pm - Comic Books to Movies with Len Wein, Marv Wolfman and me(!). Anyone got any good adaptations to bring up (or any queries I should ask Joe about what he'd do if he has the chance?)

              3:00 pm - Autographing

              Saturday

Writing SF for Television & Movies with Jane Espensen, David Gerrold, Robert Gordon, Gillian Horvath, Craig Miller

TV & the Fan Community with Emma Bull, Tina Beychok, Lorien Gray, Gillian Horvath & Rebecca Lilienfeld.

              Sunday

<gnashes teeth> Figures. I've always wanted to see JMS in actual discussions rather than just spotlight Q&A sessions and there are *three* and I won't be there! Arrggh! Anybody able to record them for me?

Lee, we know that JMS has always ached to write Superman-see if you can get him to tell you what he'd do with a Supes movie. Or more about what he did with the Silver Surfer script.

                  Hi Lee!

Sorry I'll be missing you at LosCon, but I'll presumably see you at Gallifrey.

Speaking of JMS recordings -- Jan: keep reminding me to get you the one from my panel a few weeks ago.

Hey is there a place to trade con recordings? I'd love to virtually attend more cons.

                      Well???

Here it is Monday morning and you haven't reported back, Lee. How were the panels? Details, man! We want details!

                      Jason, consider yourself nagged.

I ended up driving back to Arizona on Monday.

I caught two of the three panels Joe was on, the only one I recorded was the Writing SF for TV & Movies panel. The TV & Fandom community panel I missed due to a schedule conflict (although I'd offered to be on the panel to give the fan perspective). I ended up not catching the autograph session due to being on another panel at the same time. I actually didn't really get a chance to chat with Joe as I'd hoped to (and once again, forgot to ask how Buddy was doing, which is what my girlfriend wants to know). He was generally mobbed at the end of each panel, although from what I heard there wasn't much of a line at the signing aside from one couple that had two sets of the script books to get signed. I caught up with David Gerrold to get his signature on the Other Voices with his script and one of the two D.C. Fontana ones (I forgot her scripts were not all in the same volume and didn't have time to go back up to the room to get the other one). Marc Zicree did not end up on programming after having been listed on the web site as a participant.

On the two panels I was there for, there wasn't much that we hadn't heard before. On the Silver Surfer movie, that's pretty much on hold due to the lack of performance by the second FF movie, which featured the SS. He's still two meetings away from the third of the three biggies happening. Probably the biggest news was he'd just turned in the first draft of the Forbidden Planet script. He's also working on developing Midnight Nation as a movie for his "The Horse You Rode In On" production company. We did discuss Superman and the DC movies, but he didn't offer any indications that he had any inside info. In the Writing SF for TV and movies panel, I don't think there was anything new in there either. Some of it was obviously new to a lot of people there, though. I talked to the person who is running programming for next year's LosCon and she was suprised that Straczynski was there this year because as far as she knew, he didn't have anything new to talk about! I set her straight.

                          Some other notes...

On the Battlestar Galactica Then & Now panel, we had a good discussion with Jane Espenson, Mojo and their science advisor about the show. Jane didn't really offer any specific hints other than (and the other people echoed the sentiment) that what goes down in the final episodes is very unexpected. The finale will be three hours, but SciFi hasn't yet indicated show they will air it. Mojo is still working on the visual effects for the finale. Although, Jane didn't know anything about a SciFi pickup for Caprica, which got announced yesterday. By the time you've seen the rest of the series as well as the movie "The Plan" (written by Jane), all of the questions should be answered.

In the Comics to Film panel, Len Wein said he'd seen the Watchman movie and that it is really good. He edited the original comic.

On the Fantasy on TV panel with D.C. Fontana, we talked about the various stuff going on right now and veered off into the future of TV and syndication and downloading.

I did a Films 2008 panel with Author GoH John Scalzi and Gary Westfahl (who reviews movies on the Locus web site) which was a fun panel. We delved into which films were likely to get nominated for a Hugo (Batman Begins, Iron Man, and Wall-E were the favorites). I also caught Scalzi's Guest of Honor panel after which Wil Wheaton joined him for an hour. Some of that may already be up on You Tube.

Next year I hope to be able to catch more stuff, since I won't be having to worry about holding a room party each night (Discworld on Friday night and FiestaCon/WesterCon 62 on Saturday night).

Someday I'll get more of my con video organized onto DVDs (and maybe get Shane Shallenberger to do the same). Between the two of us, we probably have most of Joe's main panels at Loscon, Gallifrey One, and ComicCon during the B5/Crusade era.

Thanks, Lee! Sorry, I'd forgotten that whole driving home thing.

Did more people understand about the name of his production company now that 'Changeling' has been out for a while?

Just curious, did JMS mention what he'd do with Superman if given the chance, either in comics or film? Did he give any thoughts to the current batch of comics by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, James Robinson?
