  • Hello all - and an Idea

    Hello All,

I'm a new member, and probably a bit behind the times -- unfortunately, I was overseas in the military when B5 first came out, and by the time I got back stateside it was over -- for years now, I've been a big sci-fi fan, but have never been able to see the entire series -- Recently, a friend loaned me his entire series... and.... WOW.

The idea I have, though, is a hope that maybe we as fans can push the television companies to start picking up this genre again.
I tried to get into the new Battlestar Galactica.... but it really does not seem to be going anywhere at all -- I want to see battles, fleet actions, and a good story. I'd really love to see this outside of video games, ect. Being new to a number of the sci-fi forums, I am looking for something that isn't a rehash of a current series, or a re-imagining of something already done. As a fan, I want a new storyline, and would love to chat with anyone that also has ideas.

I sometimes wonder if I am the only one who misses the older Battlestar Galactica, the Buck Rogers, Jason of Star Command, ect. Imagine what we could do with todays computer graphics, and well written storylines....

If anyone out there has ideas this way, feel free to respond.... maybe we can get something going.

    Welcome to the group.

As far as television, grass roots efforts are spotty at best. Even Crusade couldn't be saved. The networks and production companies like to keep risk to a minimum and profit to a maximum whenever possible. The current trend of reality television emphasises the cost-cutting element. There are a lot of shows on with a sci-fi angle to them, but the closest that actual "space sci-fi" has come to the major networks since the old Galactica went off the air has only been on secondary networks such as UPN, Fox, FX, etc.

Luckily, though, entertainment does run in cycles and if a product is successful it will often spawn imitators. Cross your fingers and hope for the success of J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK.

And who knows? New found media darling J. Michael Straczynski may even have something to offer.
Only a fool fights in a burning house.

Welcome, Nahuris! And congratulations on discovering B5.

Apologies in advance for this sounding cynical because I *do* understand and believe in what you'd like to do. I just don't think that something this unfocused would have much chance of developing into a real campaign. The recent success stories of fan campaigns (Fans supporting the WGA strike, Jericho's second chance, etc.) seemed to have one thing in common - they made it *easy* for fans to participate with 'click here to donate' buttons on websites and the like. When it comes to asking fans to actually *do* something, like sit down and compose a snail-mail letter, the going gets much harder.

I tried to get into the new Battlestar Galactica.... but it really does not seem to be going anywhere at all -- I want to see battles, fleet actions, and a good story. I'm in the group that couldn't care less if I never saw another battle but I know what you mean. On the other hand, I've seen some re-imaginings that really did surpass the original. I include the new BSG among these even though the incessant grimness drove me away.

I sometimes wonder if I am the only one who misses the older Battlestar Galactica, the Buck Rogers, Jason of Star Command, ect. Imagine what we could do with todays computer graphics, and well written storylines....
Nope, I'm with you there. Though I love a continuing storyline, I don't mind episodic just-for-fun shows at all. Perhaps that's why I'm enjoying Dr. Who so much with it's rollicking adventure mixed in with drama.

If somebody does come up with an idea to encourage more SF shows that doesn't involve hacking into the Nielsen computers, feel free to post here. There are plenty of us who absorbed the B5 philosophy that "We must create the future or somebody else will do it for us."

How much of the new BSG did you watch? Did you start from the beginning (the 2003 mini-series)? I only ask because I would say the show is very clearly going somewhere, has good stories, and some highly impressive battles! Of course, just like Babylon 5, such things don't feature in every episode, there are quieter character driven episodes and one off side-stories. It's certainly the best existing example I can think of the kind of thing you're after.

I fully agree on that one.
