Considering that it's on an Air Force fighter training base,
I would guess that it's bombing target. And it looks like one
jet jockey scored a bullseye. :-)

Okay, yeah, a topo map confirms it:

    Note the designation "Target 5216T".

    Patty
I'd love to see what it looked like via Google Earth, though.

Hey! Ya know what that 5 minutes would be on my dial-up?

Thanks, Vakie. I can picture it now. In 4 hundred years archeologists will be postulating that that mysterious figure proves that we worshipped an angular earth diety and there were different levels of salvation...

Wow! Lots more going on here than just the glif. Check out the numbered "natural formations."
            here
            1. A duplicate of the "Face On Mars"
            2. A pyramid city that possibly serves as a repair/reception facillity for the ships that landed on the light colored airstrip to the immediate right of the city.
            3. Obviously the focal temple (note the size differencd between that pyramid and the service and repair pyramids of "Pyramid City.").

At last! Confirmation that we are not alone.
            no boom today . . .

Could be the work of celestial or terrestrial fans of the band Gong. If either be the case, keep an eye on it 'cause they're not quite done yet.

I followed the road leading out of the left side of the feature to the west, and found a runway a short distance away at 37 35 12.09 N 116 55 03.36 W and a pair of labels reading 'Unknown jet on runway' and 'explosion crater on runway'.

There's also a very bizarre, very regular series of holes in the ground nearby at 37 37 33.81 N 116 52 22.59 W. No buildings that I can see on the surface, so I guess they're underground.

This is a nuclear test site? Or Area 51?

                This is fun..

Could anyone speculate what the black feature nearby at 37 40 01.41 N 117 02 43.06 W is? Perhaps a crater caused by a nuke? It has a road across it, so someone has obviously considered it worth visiting.

It looks like a lava extrusion to me. There is some old volcanic stuff in the area and the topo map shows it as gaining elevations, so its not a hole in the ground.

That's a helluva big bombing target. The thing's a kilometer on a side, if Google Maps' scale is right. I guess they really didn't want the pilots to get lost.

Also, if you look closely at the northern tip of the triangle target, there's a number "2".

Another target lies 45 miles east, and it has a number "3".

So who will be the first to find target #1?

Ooh, I think I might have found it. 37░29'16.07"N 116░13'41.57"W. The terrain is different, so it's much harder to spot. Honestly, I can't see the number 1, but it does seem to be a target inside a triangle.

And now it's time to do something a bit more useful.
