  • JMSNews.com supports the striking writers

A couple of days ago, our Admin/Site Owner, DougO got a letter from a fan letting him know about a growing movement of fans who want to show support for the striking writers. Originally a campaign by Joss Whedon fans at whedonesque.com, the effort has quickly grown to encompass any and all fandoms. As the the banner there reads, "You fed our minds. We'd like to return the favor."

Can anybody dispute that Babylon 5 also fed our minds? Here at JMSNews.com, we'd like to encourage everyone to join the effort and 'return the favor'. Or, to phrase it as JMS did, "It taught us that we have to create the future, or others will do it for us."

There are many things that we, as fans can do to support the writers as they fight to get a fair contract. Check out fans4writers.com for ideas or to contribute via their effort. Here at JMSnews.com, we salute the effort and will be working to add our own support.

I'm going to sticky this thread and I encourage you all to get involved. Please use this thread to talk about what you're doing to support the effort. Discussions about the strike itself can continue on the thread that's already in this forum.

Some of the things you can find over at fans4wrtiters.com are postcards you can send to the AMPTP, avatars to show your support on the forums you visit, banners that you can add to your own websites and more. Remember:

The future is always changing. We create the future with our words
and our deeds and our beliefs.

Just to get the ball rolling, here's what I've done so far:

    - Added the news of the campaign to the Site Log on the JMSNews.com home page.

    - Changed my Avatar here and on other forums to 'Babylon 5 fans support the writers'. Avatars and banners can be found here.

    - Copied the informational email info that came to DougO in email to the DragonCon Yahoo Group for the track that covers American SF TV.

    - Signed the online petition supporting the writers (38,642 signatures so far).

    - Sent info on the campaign to Sandy Bruckner of the ISNnews: The Zocalo Today website.

I'll be sending postcards to the AMPTP this coming week. If anybody has any addresses for sponsers that they're sending postcards to, please post them here, too.

    Next?

I just discovered that fans4writers.com has their own CafePress shop. Another fan is willing to make show-specific items here.

I was planning on being in Manhattan on Thursday, and if I have time between my two appointments I was looking into swinging by wherever the picket line was to buy some coffee/hot chocolate/whatever other beverage for the folks there. If time doesn't permit, I'll be back in a couple of weeks with a much looser schedule with more room in it to stop by a show support. (If this thing is still going on in December, God forbid...)

Fans4Writers.com is raising money do do some 'skytyping' over the Rose Bowl Parade (or possibly the Rose Bowl itself). Each of 5 messages will be 5 miles long. What they'll say is being kept secret for now.

Part of the fundraising is a silent auction with some very cool stuff. Check it out!
