  • "Changeling" news - MAJOR spoilers

Really - don't read if you don't want major story elements spoiled.

    The Hollywood Reporter reports that:
    Jeffrey Donovan (Getty Images photo)
Jeffrey Donovan, Colm Feore and John Malkovich have joined Angelina Jolie in "Changeling," a true life drama that Clint Eastwood is directing for Universal and Imagine.

The story follows a woman (Jolie) whose son goes missing in 1920s Los Angeles. The police return the wrong child and the woman is thrown into an insane asylum for disagreeing with the LAPD. When it seems that her real son has been murdered by a child serial killer and the child returned admits to fraud, she takes her case to the city council and takes down the mayor, the police chief and several corrupt officers, concurrently sparking changes in the insanity legislation.

Okay, I read it. It sounds like the kind of thing that JMS likes, nothing and no one is exactly like it seems. Full of twists. I can't wait to see it!

I wonder if Joe is lurking somewhere there in the background?

Reverend Malkovich? Sweet! John and a couple others join the new Eastwood flick CHANGELING!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I know that this film is a serious drama and not a remake of the great George C. Scott horror movie, but I can't help it that every time I see the title "CHANGELING" anywhere the first thing that pops into my head is the image of that old-time wheelchair being all creepy.

So, the flick is set in 1920s LA and focuses on a woman whose son goes missing. Angelina Jolie plays the mother. The cops return a boy to her, but it's not her son. They don't believe her and off she goes to the looney bin, despite her protests that she is sane.

This is based on a true life story, so you know some corrupt assholes are going down.

Clint Eastwood directs for Universal and they just brought on a bunch of actors, the most intriguing of which are Colm Feore (who will play the chief of police), Jeffrey Donovan (who will play a police captain) and John Malkovich (who plays a reverend).

Sounds great to me. I might give the script a read some time in the near future. I've heard it's fantastic. What do you folks think?

I'm sorry, what were we talking about again?

Me too... and I'm now curious. How do we know this is the case the movie is based on? I see no mention of a mother getting a son back that isn't hers. Has JMS or someone else said this was the case?

I'm assuming that they were checking character names but I didn't check that. All of the news articles were about the murderer but JMS's story is about the mother.

The only character names I see mentioned here:

                      http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0824747/

are Rachel Clark and Jeffrey. Have any of the other chacter names been released? And true there is a Clark family tied to the articles linked above but the only names I see there are:

                      Sanford Clark
Winnefred Clark, mother of Sanford Clark
Jessie Clark, sister of Sanford Clark

And even when a story is based on a true story aren't the character names typically changed. The conection isn't obvious to me but I certainly don't have the script either.

If you read those articles carefully, you'll see there are some clues that this is the case.
First of all, from the hollywood reporter story:

"When it seems that her real son has been murdered by a child serial killer.."

                        And, from http://markgribben.com/index.php?cat=14

"Sanford told police that NorthcottÆs first victim was 9-year-old Walter Collins, who had been kidnapped in April 1928. After Walter was dead, Nelson and Louis Winslow were kidnapped, held captive, and then slain. He said Northcott killed the boys with an axe as his mother helped. Under threat of death, Sanford was forced to help dispose of their remains.
The last victim was the Mexican youth, whose decapitated corpse was found dumped along side a rural Riverside County road. His head was never found."

"On the day before he was to be hanged, Northcott agreed to see the mother of Walter Collins, who wanted to know if he killed her little boy. Northcott kept Christine Collins waiting for several hours before he denied murdering Walter."

These articles just tell the story of the murders. The story of how a wrong child was returned and Christine Collins was sent to an insane asylum is probably not as well known so it isn't mentioned. Haven't been able to find anything with her name online.

And I would imagine the character names have been changed for the movie.

And someone posted this on the imdb boards:

"When my friends son auditioned for the role of the imposter son, the name for him was Arthur Hutchings,he was pretending to bethe real son who's name was Walter Collins. The breakdown for the mother (Angelina) was Christine Collins."

Interesting... thanks for the info vakie. So do we know a wrong child was returned to Christine Collins and that she was sent to an insane asylum? Or is that part fiction? If its real but simply not as well known and not mentioned online I wonder how JMS came across it.

I've been there...but if you're going to take pictures, who're you
going to take pictures OF...the writer, or Angelina Jolie or Clint
                              Eastwood?

Here's a clip someone posted wherein I can be seen hitching up my
pants in a grandfatherly sort of "yep, now where can I find me some
ribs?" stupidly embarrasing kind of way. I couldn't look more
moronic, but if this is the only way to convince anyone I'm actually
                              there...
