JMS signing in London

Quick follow-up for our friends in the UK...I'll be doing a signing at
Forbidden Planet London at 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, at 1:00 p.m. on
Satuday May 12th. This will be my first signing/appearance in England
since B5 finished its run, about seven years ago.

Seven hours on trains and being ú100 ($200) out of pocket.

That's a chunk of time and a goodly sum of money to spend just for the sake of standing in a long line with lots of strangers and getting a few seconds with JMS while he signs whatever you've bought.

Even as fanatical as I can be I don't think I'd do it just for a signing unless there were folks I enjoyed spending time with as part of the equation.

Exactly.

I think I'll just save up and make my next holiday to the States intersect with a major con appearance instead. Never been to California. :^)

Let me tell you, San Diego Comic Con is an experience! But it's also incredibly crowded and you sometimes end up standing in line for *long* periods to make sure you can get into an event/spotlight/panel you're really interested in. But there's a whole lot that's interesting besides 'just' JMS.

For me, I like to go to these things on my own so I can spend as much, or as little time as I want in line or whatever. I usually end up chatting with my neighbours in line. After all, they are there for the same reason you are so there's lots to talk about.

Sometimes...sometimes. Last year at SDCC, though, I spent over 1.5 hours in line and an extra hour in a panel room in order to make SURE that I would get into JMS's spotlight where he'd promised to announce something new in the B5 Universe (B5: TLT as it turned out). I don't know what I'd've done if I hadn't manged to get in for that one since I'd promised to report back here and on the moderated newsgroup about the announcement. I think somebody might have sent the Narn Bat Squad after me if I'd missed it.

Oh, agreed. There's always somebody to talk to in line and it's nice to be among people who share the same general interests even if not your specific interest. In the 'real world' all too often people look at you funny when you say you're a comics/SF/Fantasy/genre fan. Sort of the same way I look at fanatical sports fans, in fact.

Occasionally I wear my "Only one human captain..." t-shirt to work. People ask what it means and I tell them they'll get a gold star if they know. So far no one has. Oh well, I'll wear it at my next con. That'll be my 'costume' since I don't dress up like so many others do.

I finally met him and it was an honor...

For a moment I actually got emotional, holding those Babylon 5 script books in my hands. Because, I realized that he is the one who created something so wonderful and dear to my heart. Something that inspired me to never surrender my dreams. And someone who shared so much with us about the process that went into creating this wonderful universe we know in Babylon 5.

So, now I am in London, working hard to realize my dreams and do what I have always dreamt of.
Meeting him and knowing the history of how Babylon 5 was born and all the people involved and those we lost along the way... made me a bit emotional.

Joe, thank you again for giving us something so special...

In general, thank you for being you...

And I hope the "paper hat" was the right size...

Ya, I know. That's why I hang out here. Almost everyone has seen Severed Dreams a gazillion times (and that's a lot of times! )

Signed Items at FP

FYI,

Forbidden Planet now has a lot of signed Straczynski items for sale in their Signed area.

Be warned if you order from them, you may get a confirmation email from them confirming the amount of shipping (at least if doing it from the US) and indicating (in a paragraph at the END of the email) that if you don't respond to them approving it, your order will be canceled.

I'm still trying to find out if my signed and personalized copy of Children of Hurin I ordered when they had Alan Lee signing was canceled and then sold to someone....
