  • JMS Appearances 2023

Seems like a good time to start a thread on all of the various things JMS has been mentioning talking about at SDCC this year (July 19-23, long sold out already). These are some of the things that may be revealed there:

    - Babylon 5-A - This is the *completed* B5 project that JMS has mentioned a number of times both on Twitter and on Patreon. It's NOT the reimagining. So far it's unknown what format or venue it will be released on but that should be what we find out at SDCC. JMS has said that it will feature all of the remaining main cast (which in TV-speak generally means folks who were in the main titles).

    - 30th Anniversary "something special" - I can't really tell from the wording if this might be the same as B5-A or not?

Click image for larger version Name:	30th anniversary.jpg Views:	1 Size:	43.4 KB ID:	162258

    - Audio Dramas - JMS has mentioned writing to audio dramas, one anthology-style, for a major player. We hope to learn about distribution at SDCC.

    - A secret multi-issue project for Marvel Comics.

    - At least one more project for AWA where he's been doing the Reborns series.

    - "The Glass Box" - a non-genre novel that I believe is due out this fall.

    - "The Flickering Light" feature film slated to go to camera this summer.

    - All the latest on the Harlan and Susan Ellison publishing and museum news.

And it feels like I'm missing something but now the thread is here I can add to it at will. Stay tuned...

Oh - and yes, your Intrepid Reporter will definitely be there!

Definitely interested to hear more about the Flickering Light and who is directing. Subject matter is definitely interesting and one of the few new things he's mentioned in the past that I'm genuinely stoked for.
Captain John Sheridan: I really *hate* it when you do that.

    Kosh: Good!

So much fun to speculate on who might be in the Secret Project. Talia? Marcus? Ivanova and Lochley on screen together?
Looking forward to the audio dramas as have too many Audible Credits piling up.

Perhaps there eventually might be a Virtual/Online tour of the museum for those of us who live on the boring Eastern Seaboard.
?? Question for the Intrepid Reporter to ask ??

And the cool thing about B5's initial release is there are technically TWO "anniversaries" - 30th of the Pilot is this year and 30th of S1E1 is next year. Hopefully next year's anniversary will herald the re-imaging going forward.

You can be sure that Your Intrepid Reporter will be sure to ask that either in person or online as the opening gets closer!

Got this info in email yesterday. Looks like we know what the other con JMS Tweeted about will be - Phoenix Fan Fusion (Formerly Phoenix Comic-Con) which was where the 20th anniversary con was..

UGGGH He teased another appearance before SDCC. I was sooooooooooo hoping it was something in Chicago. Then I'd be able to drive to it. Actually better still St Louis is closer. I think he needs to accommodate Looney and I'm sure you will all agree. Better still why doesn't he just come to my house.

So, is anyone coming out to Phoenix for the Con? I'm torn about attending, but would definitely like to see Joe. Walter Koenig will also be there, but his focus will be on Trek and the Nichelle Nichols foundation. The only B5 related fan panel is the B5 Vs DS9 one.

Disclaimer - I was the Books and Authors Manager with Phoenix ComiCon from 2009-2015 and also helped out with organizing the Babylon 5 reunion. I was let go from the con in 2015 due to "creative differences", most of which were how their head of talent thought she knew better on how things should be managed with authors and publishers. She was let go a couple of years after that when they realized that she really didn't know better (she pretty much ruined the cons relationship with Wil Wheaton among others) The con has definitely had its issues, and this is really the first full one post covid.

I'll be there! Do you think all the fan panels are already listed online? I was puzzled that so many items were already scheduled publicly but I'm used to a two-weeks-out unveiling of schedules.

ETA: JMS' blurb is on the website now.

They seem to get all the fan panels set up pretty early now. A lot of them are fan groups offering panels (the local Trek club does most of the Trek panels, although the B5 VS DS9 panel is not one of them). Its not really clear how much staff they have that actually comes up with panel ideas. The panels with the guests are usually the last ones posted.

Makes sense. Sorry to see that Edward James Olmos just cancelled. I'd have enjoyed seeing him, if only to listen to his voice! .

Anyone else going to Phoenix besides me and Jan? Guest schedules (signings/ photo ops, etc) have been posted. Joe is going to table and sell his own stuff there and only has two panels scheduled (his announcement on Patreon made it sound like there might be more than two panels, but there's just a spotlight on Friday and the Writer's Workshop on Saturday. Not good is his spotlight panel overlaps with Claudia Christian's panel. (I've sent a note to the head of programming about that overlap). I'm thinking that would impact Claudia's turnout more than Joe's, but should have been avoided. Since Joe is there as a comics guest and Claudia is an actor guest, they don't take into account conflicts like that.

Thanks for asking them to change that scheduling snafu, Lee! I'll admit that I'll be pretty focused on making sure I get into JMS' spotlight panel but if there's a chance to do both, even better.

I usually don't pay much attention to schedules more than two weeks out. Think that PFF is a little more firm? I've only been the once. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Did you contact "[email protected]" or someone else, as took the schedule a step further since there is one other B5 related guest - Walter Koenig. Don't have to have Ivanova's Sunny Russian Perspective to guess when his panel is scheduled in relation to the JMS Friday panel: If JMS's second half conflicts with Claudia's panel, then the first half must conflict with Walter Koenig's panel. Additionally there is a B5/DS9 panel which also takes place during one of the Friday B5 Guest Panels. Person peeking over my shoulder said "Schedule created by DS9 fans so they can 'win' the B5/DS9 panel, as the B5 fans will all be elsewhere". 🙄
