  • JMS announced as guest at NYCC Feb. 2007

New York Comic Con has announced that JMS will be one of their Guests of Honor at the 2nd Annual Convention Feb. 23-25, 2007.

IIRC, their first con was a surprise overwhelming success that caused people to be locked out due to fire marshall concerns. This year they've got more than twice the space and intend to be ready for the crowds.

I think Colleen Doran is going to be there too.

I'm pretty sure you're right, Spoo Junky. I might give some though to going, but not until JMS confirms. That's awfully close to being in the 6 month span where he cancelled his con appearances.

I'd like to go but I think a con in NYC would be too chaotic for me. It is tempting, though.

Just idle speculation but if he has a creators' meeting at Marvel scheduled around that same week it would make sense that he would hang about for the weekend.

Good point, Frulad. I looked at the archives and it looks like the first one this year was in January. I don't know how regularly scheduled they are, though. Somebody's started a thread over on the moderated group so if the announcement's a mistake, it's likely that JMS will post.

Spoo Junky, big cons like this one can be lots of fun but you have to be prepared to rub shoulders with thousands of people you've never met, stand in long lines and do a lot of walking. Planning what panels and events you want to attend can be fun, too, but tricky.

This one is probably going to be a good one for meeting other online fans since there's a goodly number of newsgroupies up that way. The Hawthorne con was great for that! And yes, I'm giving serious consideration to going.

I missed out on meeting folks at Hawthorne because I only had time to skip in and get some stuff signed before heading into NYC to meet friends for the afternoon, so hopefully I'll be able to get match some faces to names!

That would be cool, Frulad. We had a *really* nice time that day.

I'm in the Boston area, so I might try convincing my girlfriend that she wants to go to New York. New York is definitely a lot easier to go to for a weekend than San Diego.

Jan, I'm almost certainly going -- I'll either be rooming with my husband (if he feels like carving out the time to attend), or Caryn (yay, expatriate New Yorker chicks rooming together!). The only question now is...which restaurants? :-)

Part of me only wants to eat well while I'm there (like Katz's deli, some place in Little Italy, Morimoto's or Nobu one night)...but it might be fun to do Mars 2112 as a group, just for the kitsch factor and the relevance:

                            Mars 2112 restaurant

I had to laugh to see The New Yorker as one of the main hotels for the con. The New Yorker used to be owned by the Moonies, and since two of my sisters-in-law passed through the Unification Church, they spent a lot of time there, learning how to sell flowers and stuff like that. Paul and I spent a good deal of our early courtship meeting outside the place (he'd pop into town and meet up with his sisters first). Ah, nostalgia.

I'm giving it serious consideration. Only trouble is that it's COLD up there in February!

Yeah, that looks like fun. I'd love to go back to Carmine's in the theater district but the portions are just so huge! I'd need to be sure to go with folks who could take doggie bags with them.

                              Decisions, decisions....
