  • Who's going to be at Worldcon?

2006 is definitely turning out to be the year of conventions for me. Rather to my surprise I find that this morning I've made all of the arrangements to go to Worldcon this month.

So...who else is going to be there?

Isn't that mainly a convention for printed science fiction stories?

    Print is dead.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

Maybe in your world but certainly not in mine. Looking at the schedule, there's a fair number of panels on writing for various forms including scripts and comics.

Not for the past several, er, decades.

              That's quite the schedule.

WHAT I DO WHEN I SHOULD BE WRITING
For me, that'd be "What I should be doing when I'm writing."

                WorldCon

I'll be there. I'm even on a handful of panels.

Cool, which ones? I missed you at SDCC, mainly because I never found the mezzanine where the fan tables were.

To be fair to LessonInMachismo, WorldCon has long been known as the premiere literary con. I worked in book publishing back in the 80s, and my best friend has been a prominent sf editor in publishing for several decades, and that's the con of note for people in the book biz. Kind of like PhilCon in that respect. It doesn't matter how much media programming they add; to most people who have been con-goers for a long time, it's still mainly a literary con. I guess reputations are hard to shake!

On a (faintly) related note (hey it's a con, close enough) is anyone on this board going to Discworld this year?

"There are no good wars. War is always the worst possible way to resolve differences. It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

Well, sci-fi print wasn't dead in 1986, but it is now.

Why do you say so? And do you differentiate between print and text SF?

If print was truly dead, then I sincerely doubt we'd have publishers printing all these new books. Print won't die until there's no money to be made from it. I, personally, never read fiction on the web. I love books and reading on the computer just irritates me. (Of course, I have to get my news from the internet so I can get the whole story)

I've been to a Worldcon in the Netherlands, and it's such an incredible experience.
