  • JMS AT San Diego ComicCon 2006

Well I ain't going, unless someone wants to give me a couple of hundred bucks or so , but in the interest of those who are (Jan, I'm looking at you here) I thought I'd throw up the con's Thursday JMS-related schedule, as just posted at Newsarama-

    3:00-4:30 Marvel Comics: Civil Warù
The best-selling book of the new millennium has plunged the Marvel Universe into war, pitting friend against friend. Come in for a debriefing and get a sneak peek at what's to come from Joe Quesada and J. Michael Straczynski (Amazing Spider-Man), Paul Jenkins (Civil War: Front Line), Marc Guggenheim (Wolverine), Robert and Charles Knauf (Iron Man), and many more! Also, surprise announcements from Jeph Loeb (Ultimates 3) and Frank Cho (New Avengers).

And in non-JMS events, these two stood out-

6:00-7:00 The Incredible Hulk and More: Kenneth Johnsonù
Join Kenneth Johnson, the writer/producer/director of The Incredible Hulk and creator of Bionic Woman, Six Million Dollar Man, V, and Alien Nation for an in-depth view on how he helped create some of the most loved television series of all time and his upcoming novel V: The Second Generation, based on his screenplay for a new miniseries sequel currently in development. Q & A to follow!
    Room 6B
As long as the new project ignores the TV series, I'm in!

10:15-12:15 CCI:IFF Extra: IFC Presents This Film Is Not Yet Ratedù
This Film Is Not Yet Rated, an IFC Original Documentary from Oscar-nominated director Kirby Dick (Twist of Faith), is an unprecedented investigation into the MPAA film ratings system and its profound impact on American culture. See what Entertainment Weekly calls "an irresistible muckraking documentary that might just shake up the world of movies, which would be good news for movie addicts everywhere," followed by a Q&A with Kirby Dick and producer Eddie Schmidt.
    Room 6B
I saw this at the Philly Film Fest in April and was blown away by it, actually getting into a second screening, which is the first time in my five years of going to that Fest that I saw a movie twice. Fantastic and funny.

Wow, I could feel you looking! Yes, I checked out Thursday's schedule when it went up last night and I can see already that this is going to be one of those cons where I'll have to really plan my activities. First day of the con and I've already got schedule conflicts! I'm really looking forward to it! Thanks for the heads-up, Frulad.

Now, who else is going? Doug, Lee, me...c'mon, let us know!

Friday's schedule is up now. I think it's pretty sure that I'm not going to want to miss this one:

10:30-11:30 Marvel: Spider-Man: Then and Nowù Welcome, True Believers, to a once-in-a-lifetime event! In one room for the first and only time, join the men who have influenced Spider-Man's life from the beginning and those who are shaping him into the man he is today: Stan Lee, Joe Quesada, and J. Michael Straczynski! Find out what went into creating the world's greatest superhero and what the future holds for the wall-crawler. Room 6A
There's also one of JMS on writing. This is gonna be GOOD!

One of my favorites from the Robert A. Heinlein quote book:

That's a great line. I'll have to work that into the budget discussions I have with my wife.

Maybe it'll help if you follow one of his other pieces of advice - "Rub her feet."
                Probably couldn't hurt, at least.

You should rub her feet anyway. After enough foot massages, she might even suggest taking a little trip to San Diego for a weekend to, I don't know, maybe take in a Con
Flying around the room under my own power.

Oooohhh....Saturday's schedule was posted last night and my eyes popped when I saw this one:

11:30-12:30 Urban Fantastic: Our World Made Less Mundaneù The past decade has seen an explosion in urban fantasy, works set in the ôreal worldö but with a twist. What is the appeal? And what are the rules? Discuss keeping the unreal real with these panelists: Women of the Otherworld author Kelley Armstrong (Broken), Renaissance writer Peter David (Fall of Knight), USA Today best-selling author Nancy Holder (Daughter of the Flames), Dark ShadowsÆ Angelique, actress Lara Parker (Dark Shadows: The Salem Branch), multimedia author John Ridley (What Fire Cannot Burn) and cross-genre romance author Samantha Sommersby (Forbidden: The Claim), under the supervision of moderator Maryelizabeth Hart. Room 9
I'd want to go to see Peter David but the fact that Lara Parker is going to be there is just Fantastic!! She's written a couple of Dark Shadows books (I think the second is coming out shortly) and Dark Shadows was my very first Fandom. As it happens, I have an original DS script that might actually have belonged to her so I'll have to take it along.

JMS's spotlight is on Saturday - only for an hour.

                          More Comic Con stuff

                          FYI,

If you want to catch Peter David when there isn't a crowd, check to see when he will be at the Claypool comics booth (Soulsearchers and Co) or maybe even IDW (Fallen Angel).

Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess will be making an appearance at the Stardust movie panel on Friday afternoon. Neil likely won't be doing a signing, though, since he's mainly flying in just for the panel. Vess has generally been available at the Durwaigh Gallery booth the last few years, but they don't appear to be exhibiting this year.

Also best to check the daily zine for any other booth appearances. Marvel is sharing a booth with Activision this year (they have a much smaller booth presence than DC) and it is likely Straczynski will be showing up there at some point.

If you are interested in artists, Donato Giancola will have his booth (Danato arts) and several other artists will be sharing space (Kinoko Y. Craft for one). Most of the artists doing Straczynksi comics will be on hand, although not sure what signing schedules they have.

Of course, there are always surprises as well.

I will be spending part of my time at the Arizona SF Cons table on the Mezzanine with the other fan tables if anyone wants to say hi.
