  • Straczynskicast

Inspired by the Babylon podcast, and Aaron's solo effort with sci-fi dig, I'm giving serious consideration to recording a Straczynskicast. The plan is to just chat about all things JMS.

I was going to record an initial 10 - 15 minute small cast, and seed it out there and see what reactions there were. Obviously I'd be covering Bab 5, but also his comic book stuff, other series he's done and anything else ye can supply me with. The initial cast will probably just be me, indicating what I hope to do with it and soliciting for material for regular stuff.

What I'm looking for is, if I do put the thing up, will ye give me feedback on it . If I do get up and running I'm hoping to feature guest submissions (from ye of course) and I'll porbably stick a message up in the B5 newsgroup once I'm up and running.

Hoping to have my initial (cast #0) done in some acceptable format by 14th June, but I need to look into stuff like setting up a web site for it, and the various ancillary things associated with podcasting.
All help appreciated, please either PM me, email the address associated with this ID, or reply to the thread.

Any and all feedback on what ye think, or if ye would like to help is appreciated.

It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

Don't use the "straczynskicast" name. Neither use variants like "JMScast"...
You don't want people to ever think that they are gonna hear JMS in the podcast, you risk that those confused will loose interest after finding that the podcast is not what they tought.

And please, whatever you name it make it the "____ podcast".
Podcasting is already a bad enough neologism, making -cast/-casting a suffix for "spoken MP3 for download" would be worse.

Other suggestions: there are some JMS related sites (Worlds of JMS is one) that might be of help in getting news, participating, making people aware of the podcast, have you contacted the site masters?

And the most important one... is there really a public for this?
Is the Babylon 5 podcast successful enough to think there will be a public for a JMS podcast? Are there comics related podcasts, covering JMS-written comics, succesful enough that a podcast devoted to JMS could be sucessful?
And finally, if those podcasts exist and are succesful, is your podcast necessary?

I'm not questioning to be negative, to me those are questions that should be asked (think of a podcast as a product, would people "buy" it, would they "pay" their free time to listen to it?) and for all I know you already know the answers to be "yes".
Such... is the respect paid to science that the most absurd opinions may become current, provided they are expressed in language, the sound of which recalls some well-known scientific phrase

well, I'm sure you've all read JMS's response by now, guess that's knocked on the head
Wasn't in nice to get such a coherent, rational response though, rather than something along the lines of 'pi** off' or n oresponse at all.
Not that I'd expect anything less bu tstill..
Anyway, as I said in the newsgroup, I'll probably go with a more general sci-fi in ireland type podcast, as there aren't enough Irish Accents out there in Podcast land.

I'm really not taht fusst if htere's a market, I'm doing this for the hell of it.

        OK Fantastic news!!
A friend of mine who runs a radio station
has offered the studio to me for recording the podcast
This means I'll get a professional quality recording from day one, wahey!!
Based upon suggestions from people in the newsgroup I'll be focusing on a different author every week. There will be a promo on sci-fi Dig in the next week or so and a small popdcast (15 mins or so) in the next two weeks followed by one lasting the full hour once I get the domain osrted and other things worked out.

FYI my domain name (phazecast.com) now exists, I'm gonna spend the w/e reading tutorials on how to actually upload stuff to it and get the www side of it working. Intersting point, the most reasonable irish provider offered me 1/4 gig of storage and 5 gig of throughput a month, the first American hoster I tried
            a) registered the domain and
            b) offerred me 5,000MB of storage and a 250,000Mb throughput per month for the same money.
That's why I'm hosting in the states - go free enterprise.

              Good Luck
There are some really good software packages out there that will help you with getting the rss feed "wrapped" around the mp3 file. On the Mac side, the one that I am thinking of is Podcast maker and I am sure that there is something similar on the Windows side of things.
