I think it may have been more an issue of the character than the actor. Maybe that's just because I think of Sinclair the way O'Hare played him. Like JMS has said, the character of Sheridan worked better for the story than the character of Sinclair. Had Sinclair originally been that kind of character, maybe O'Hare would have stayed. I'd like to think O'Hare is a good enough actor that he would have been able to play the role of Sheridan. Only really knowing him as Sinclair, though, it's hard to imagine. From what I've read, O'Hare was (and probably still is) a fairly high-demand stage actor, so he probably had other job offers at the time. Maybe he didn't enjoy television acting as much as stage work and wanted to return to what he did best and enjoyed most. I really don't think O'Hare was fired or forced out. My guess is that he to some extent wanted to leave, while at the same time JMS wanted to change the character. The only real question is which one said something to the other first.

Omaha, I don't much care for Jane, and to be honest she's right up there with Delenn for me, but your reasoning that the B5 story is really the story of Jane is absolutely priceless. Do you know of any other programmes or real world events that can be attributed to Jane?

I'm not all that sure that Volume 3 will include the complete, unvarnished truth on the MOH situation, but I don't think it will be JMS not wanting to tell the whole story so much as trying to be a gentleman and a nice guy. I know I've got several interviews that express a number of different opinions, and I suspect somewhere in the middle lies the truth. Here's one from PTEN exec Greg Maday, who certainly should have been in a position to know:

Joe: Replacing your lead in the first season is a pretty big step.
Greg: We liked Michael, and as I indicated earlier, we were really starting to question and looking at and saying, æWhat can we do to A) broaden the audience and make the show survive, and B) did we have the right cast?Æ and because we felt the look of the show was very solid and the story-telling was very solid albeit complex, what was left to examine at that point when we were trying again to find a broader audience was really looking at the cast, and I think as much as we liked Michael and felt he was doing a good job, we felt if we brought in somebody of recognizability, who had some stature in the business, who people knew, that people who knew of his accomplishments and liked the other series that he had done, might sample the show, so the decision was really based on programming, it really wasnÆt based on talent or the job somebody was doing, it was based on how can we potentially expand this show and bring more people into it?

At the very least, Maday's statement is at odds with JMS's 1994 comments that Jan linked to earlier.

Basically, I think he tells us that it's none of our business. I can't say I disagree.

Jan, from your post in the script book #3 spoiler section that JMS basically reiterates his 'four people in the room' story from a decade ago. Fortunately, I managed to interview all four people in the room at various points in time, so when I get around to writing my own book, I'll try and put in all four perspectives and let the chips fall where they may. Maybe in this case, truth is a four-pointed sword.
