  • Scifi Poll best Scifi Movie, tv show or Book

ThereÆs a poll over at SciFI.com right now asking

"The Newscientist.com web site polled readers and came up with this list of the top five SF books, TV shows or Movies ever. Which would be your pick for the top one?"

    1. Firefly/Serenity

    2. Farscape

    3. Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy (book)

    4. Babylon 5

    5. Battlestar Galatica

With over 2000 votes Babylon 5 is narrowly leading Firefly. Personally it makes me happy to see that even after 7 year Babylon 5 is still held is such high regard by the Sci-Fi community. And when you consider how in our society new things block out the old it seems all that much more remarkable.

I find it very interesting that the Star Trek franchise is missing ENTIRELY from the top 10.

Could you possibly include the link? I'd like to go over there and vote, if the poll is still open.

            Night Marshal,

Followed your link to vote, and couldn't help noticing the ad there for Battlestar Galactica with Edward Olmos and Mary McDonnell, and how they brushed her appearance up for wrinkles and such, but not Olmos' appearance.

Don't get me wrong .. I think she is a very beautiful woman (very HOT in "Dances With Wolves"), but I thought it funny the ad people would dress her appearance up and not Olmos. I don't think she needs to be "dressed up" a bit.

I don't control the Ads but its funny to have a poll asking about Scifi movies tv shows and book, one of which being Battlestar Galatica while at the same time there is a add for the same show on that very page within site of each other. I wonder if Scifi is trying to rig the poll

And as for your other point about Olmos, I don't think photoshop is powerfull enought to make him look younger than 500 but maybe that just something I heard on the internet

Olmos was always a craggy faced guy, even when he appeared in Bladerunner.

Firefly is currently in the lead now.

You know, I never thought about this, but I guess it is possible that they actually "dressed down" Mary McDonnell's appearance in the series with makeup just to make her appear older for her character. I guess it's possible.

I'm not ranting on her, even though it may appear that way. She's truly a beautiful woman. With the way all the actresses are nowadays, not wanting to show their true age by all the facelifts and what-have-you-lifts, I thought it a credit to her to come on the film and do her fine acting and go past/reject the idea that females in that age group have to resort to that to get work.

B5 caught up and passed Serenity Wednesday afternoon. As of right now:

                        B5: 30%
                        Serenity: 29%
                        Farscape: 21%
                        BG: 13%
                        HGttG: 7%
                        ..with 16,076 votes in.

Hrm. I think the LiveJournal community came in strong this morning.

... Not 100% on topic, but I don't want to start a new thread for a simple question I want to throw out (apologies, Mods). This thread was pretty close, so . . .

... I've been away from US programming for a long time and I'm looking for some good SF I can get on DVDs. I have no idea what's good. I would appreciate recommendations. I've done research on-line, of course, but it's impossible to know what's good by looking at the pages meant to promote these shows. I'm talking about TV series, just to be clear.

... I've seen all of Trek through the 2nd season of Voyager, so no need to bring up STOS, TNG or DS9. I also have most of StarGate on DVD already, so we're OK there. Babylon 5 and Crusade goes without saying, of course.

... Was Enterprise any good? I've heard a lot of people rip on it, but a lot of people like it, too. I like the idea of it...

... Farscape? ... Or that show about the young woman programmed as a kid to be an assassin, now on the run (can't recall the title)...?

... What else has come out, THAT IS GOOD, in the last decade? Any rec's would be much appreciated.

                            ... Sincere thanks, in advance.

To me there is Big 4 - B5, Farscape, Firefly (sadly only 15 episodes) and new Battlestar. All shows are as near perfect for me as they can be. I can't recomend each of them enough, superb shows.

If you liked Serenity movie (thats the one you wrote "show about the young woman programmed as a kid to be an assassin, now on the run"), you will like Firefly. But it was canceled only after 15 episodes.

I recomend Farscape. I didn't liked first season, but starting season 2 its superb. Great writing, great humor. B5 is plot-driven and Farscape is character-driven. A lot of B5 fans will say its even better than B5.
