Whatever happened to the 80 page B5 book JMS was supposed to do for Wildstorm/DC? Is that still on the board or has it fallen by the wayside with the advent of TMoS, etc...?

According to the Lurker's Guide, the three issues of In Valen's Name come out Jan-March 1998. Don't know about the graphic novel version.

When you look at the tonnes of Dr Who, Trek, Buffy and Star Wars books out there, we B5 fans are very unattended to.

Given the first several B5 books, I don't have a problem with being unattended to. If what comes from waiting is the quality of the three trilogies, I'll wait as long as it takes.

I wish that the novel storys would be adapted at least into graphic novel form.

I have so many books that I'm trying to read that I'm not sure I have the time to read all the tie ins.

And the B5 universe is so beautifully visual, I'd like a few pictures with the story.

I enjoyed the stories of the comics but the art was...really lousy, actually. As far as I was concerned, none of the characters looked right. Maybe now that B5 has more of a reputation it would get better artists.

Well, that was pure sloppiness, just like most of the SW books were. Lucasfilm (before Lucas Licensing and Lucas Books were formed) hired a lot of ST and fantasy writers (and ones that weren't very good) in the beginning, and had no kind of editorial control over any of it (by choice, apparently.) Now they seem to be getting better, but they still hire some writers who are not great and some who a majority of readers despise.

I started on The Cestus Deception by Stephen Barnes this past Summer, and I couldn't finish the third chapter. No hook, no interesting dialogue, no nothing. He is an example of a new boring writer. An example of LL hiring an old boring writer is when they got Steve Perry last year. We actually got into a flame war (and one that HE started when someone made on offhand remark about something they didn't like in his Shadows of the Empire) with the man in 1999. Jerk.

Really, really great writers are few and far between, but the ones that do exist probably would love to do B5.

JMS did great with the "Big Three" trilogies and TSW and TDitCoS, so there is no reason we can't have our cake and eat it, too. It just takes a little work. Cavelos, David and Keyes were excellent choices to write the "definitive" novels.

Admittedly much of the early Star Wars novels were rubbish. Courtship of Princess Leia anyone? The Crystal Star?

But let's exclude Timothy Zahn from the group. His three novels were very good and are what got the whole publishing ball rolling, for better or worse.

Zahn was the first author is the SW resurgence, and he was great, but he made a lot of mistakes. The books were great, but still riddled with mistakes here and there, and he needed some editorial assistance from SW aficianados, but when he wrote his first trilogy, that help wasn't there. He did ignore their suggestions to leave alone mentions of the Clone Wars.

The only "great" SW authors in my book are Zahn, Stackpole, Allston and Stover. The company seems to like Troy Denning, but I think he is highly overrated. A.C. Crispin did some good work for them, but she never came back.
