  • Wonder Woman / Superman

Well, now that we're a few issues into Hester and Roberson writing these two books, I have to say I'm a little disappointed in how these are turning out. Superman was such a deep character piece that it just doesn't work for another writer who, God bless Chris Roberson (I do like most of his other work), just isn't as meticulous about character development as JMS is. I almost think they should abandon the grounded storyline at this point.

Wonder Woman has more of a mythological driving plot to it, and with 610 it started to come full circle in the grand epic style we're used to in a JMS penned outline, but it's lost something as well. Not to the extent of Superman, but I still will probably drop this book once it's over.

    What do you guys think?

Its been a giant disappointment to say the least. The Superman story had the pontential to be a defining story for the decade and instead has become a joke. Speaking of jokes, Wonder Woman has been a disaster since day one. I thought maybe it would be a mind bending ride with an "Oh ok" reveal at best. Sorta like Brightest Day did. Now, I have no idea how this is going to end nor do I care. JMS has had a hot and cold with comic book fans. Hot when it comes to Rising Stars Earth One Superman and parts of the Spiderman run. Cold being the other parts of the Spiderman run with the Gwen clones, the totems and having a forced day in One More Day. I think we can place Superman and Wonder Woman in the ice cold section. A total waste of my money.

Yeah. I think the colds you talk about on Spider-Man are more due to editorial mandates on crossovers than JMS' actual stories. That's why he's best suited to these side stories that he can be left alone with. 2010-2011 was nearly the year of JMS' take over of DC, but instead it became the year of movies hehe.

The editing for his Spiderman run was ridiculous and they have killed the Peter Parker and MJ characters for a lot of fans. Even with Quesada writing the ridiculous coda to it, Spiderman has fallen to a low point in sales and quality. Yet, JMS came up with the Totem idea which is where a lot of fan anger comes from.

Personally I loved the totem idea, mostly because I have grown heartily sick of stories (particularly in comics) founded on the principle that radioactive things create superpowers because, hey ... it's radioactivity.

Granted, I got fed up and checked out of reading Spider-man a long time ago, and only checked in again because of JMS taking on the writing, but I do sometimes get the impression that comics fans don't want same old, same old, but really don't like things changing much either.

My impression, too. There's different tastes, of course but it seems that if they change things, there's hollaring and if they don't, there's hollaring.

As for the totem thing, I enjoyed the different possible interpretation. JMS has always been good at taking what's accepted and turning it upside down to explore.

I didn't mind the totem thing when it was explained that people with the same aspects tend to fight each other like mutants vs. mutants or patriots vs. patriots and so on. The real problem, I think people and I had was JMS trying to shove some hocus pocus mythology into a character who has a scientistic background and grounded in some sciene albeit the science is almost as hocus pocus as the mythogology. Peter's mythology is based more on tragedy as well as super science then on a big spider from the beginning of time.
