  • JMS Superman Rumors In The Man's Own Words

Apparently there were rumors about his upcoming Superman run that 1. JMS refuses to work on the book if they put Superman in any other DC comic and 2. That the run is basically going to be about Superman going on walkabout a la Stephen Franklin or Midnight Nation. He put those rumors to rest today (courtesy of bleeding cool news link below):

I wish to make several points very very clear.

It is absolutely and unequivocally untrue that I have at any time had any conversations at all with DC about Marc Guggenheim.

It is absolutely and unequivocally untrue that I insisted ôthat Superman only appear in the Superman book heÆs writing.ö

I have made every indication to DC that as and when Superman is needed during the time I am writing him, he will definitely be made available. You simply canÆt keep a character as major as Superman out of every title for the length of my initial run. ItÆs impossible, and the idea that we could or would try is absurd.

It is absolutely and unequivocally untrue that Superman is ôgoing to drop his Superman identity.ö

It is absolutely and unequivocally untrue that he ônot use his powers.ö

So to those who have reacted (properly) to say that these are stupid ideas, you are absolutely right.

    They are stupid.

Which is why we are not, have not been, and will not be doing any of them.

The only stupidity greater than those lay in the suggestion that we ever would.

A couple of weeks ago, Bleeding Cool reported rumours that Marc Guggenheim may have stepped down from the Action Comics book, because of JMS' insistence

You got me! Does this mean he's posting on bleeding cool news now? o.O

Some of the responses there are downright rude to him. I'm going to register and tear some new ones.

Doubful it'll be a regular thing. His profile shows that he only registered the same day as his post.

Yeah, some of the posters are rude, or rather aggressive, but I think it's just a measure of how much they care. What always amuses me is the posts that assume he's going to do something because a cover reminds them of what a previous writer did. So what?!

Those "rumors" aboiut Superman's new direction?

They seem to be almost cribbed from the story Kevin Smith tells about his early writing work on the never-made Nick Cage-as-Superman picture.

If you've seen "Evening with Kevin Smith," you know the one.

The producer basically sat Kevin down and said:

          "Three things:
I don't want to see him in the costume.
I don't want to see him fly.
Sometime in the third act, he has to fight a giant spider."

The movie eventually imploded, and the producer went on to make "Wild Wild West." And sure enough, there in the third act... giant (mechanical) spider.

Speaking of comics... a lot of fandoms today make me understand why the Plutonian from "Irredeemable" flipped out. Even when they love you, they hate you. Hear enough of that, and it's like "why bother?"

I haven't seen an evening with Kevin Smith actually.

Irredeemable is a fantastic comic book for sure! It's one of my favorites right now and with some spoilers....

...I really enjoyed the part where he revealed his "clark kent" identity and the woman (his 'lois') flipped out. It made me laugh. How creepy would that be?
