I really know nothing about comics. Those are preview images - so are they black and white because of that . . . . or is that the final look that appears in the final comic. . . . Looks a bit two dimensional and flat to me. . . but I don't know shit about comics.

The title of the article was interesting - "No Longer Your Grandfather's Superheroes", and jms seemed to be indicating they are targeting "especially millennials" . . . . Not sure how that will go down when the millennials notice the ages of those involved in creating comics for them. . . Though it's an interesting angle the AWA are taking to set them apart . . New approach for a new generation, etc. Wonder how far down that road they will go.

These are likely inked uncoloured pages, it's rare that a mainstream comic isn't colourised these days. Can be a stylistic choice to go black and white, but it's more the realm of indie comics. Personally, I love seeing raw inked pages, and B&W comics can be really beautiful (see From Hell, Bone, Finder, etc). So yeah, the end product will have colour.

Deodato works a lot from photo references, and his style has always been a bit static in this way.

The Superhero genre has been updated so many times now, and it's something that naturally changes with the concerns of the times and politics. Marvel and DC have constantly modernised their books in line with pop culture. So, that's really nothing new. Case in point, Captain America circa 1950 and now are worlds apart. etc. A lot of Marvel's key characters have changed over time, we've seen gender flips (Lady Thor), more representation for POC (Nick Fury), LGBT characters (Batwoman), so to me it's all fluid and ever changing. We also had Trans superheroes in Grant Morrison's 'The Invisibles' in the 90s. More recently Ken Shinga in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

Superhero comics are far from stuck in the past. Look no further than Watchmen for totally changing the genre, and it all follow from there. Further to this we have recent stuff like The Boys (recently an Amazon series), The Authority, Hawkeye, Umbrella Academy, Doom Patrol, and many more that have brought the genre into the present.

Will be interesting to see what these new characters are, and how they define the 'modern / millennial' superhero. I personally see innovation in genre as really difficult now, so colour me curious.

Yeah, that's what I thought based on the little I've read - and even I've heard of the genre shaking Watchmen. It's become an almost signature statement by jms when talking about a new project - an approach/idea unlike anything seen/done before . . . But time (and the actual comic readers) will tell I guess.

A few more details on "The Resistance" from JMS' panel in Louisville. After a worldwide pandemic that kills 400 million people, about 5% of the survivors have powers. The folks involved will be from all cultures and economic strata. The books should start coming out around March 17 (more likely the 18th as that's a Wednesday).

Release day! I got "The Resistance" and "Hotell". Even though I'd read the blackk-and-white version published in the NYCC Upshot magazine, the addition of the coloring really enhanced it. I'm very much looking forward to the rest.

"Hotell"... was okay. I liked the art quite a bit but it was sort of predictable as a story. Now if it builds from one issue to the next it might be good. Let's hope!
