  • SUPREME POWER to crossover with the Marvel Ultimate Universe

Hot off the presses from Newsarama.com-

ULTIMATE U MEETS SUPREME U IN ULTIMATE POWER
While a crossover with the regular (or "616") Marvel Universe isn't in the cards for the Ultimate Marvel U, apparently, all bets are off when it comes to the universe that's the home to J. Michael Straczynski's Squadron Supreme.

As Marvel has posted on their website - the two are meeting this fall in a nine-part crossover miniseries.

The press release on Marvel's site reads:

The Ultimate Universeùthe Universe they said could never be done and is now the Universe others try to imitate, but can never duplicate. This year promises to break records, debut new characters, and shock fans in unexpected waysùand the House of Ideas plans to do it with a star-studded roster of talent to make these books, . . . well, the ultimate!

Starting in October, Ultimate Power, a nine-issue mini-series tying the Ultimate Universe into the Supremeverse (Squadron Supreme Universe) will be written by the superpower trinity of Brian Michael Bendis, J. Michael Straczynski, and Jeph Loeb.

And then, our annuals are just that, annual, and with a once-a-year book, Marvel does it's best to put the best talent on the books where they will shine the brightest. With that, the following is a list of our Ultimate Annual titles due in August and the creators who will breathe life into them:

    Ultimate Fantastic Four Annual
    Mike Carey, writer,
    Stuart Immonen, artist
    Frazier Irving, artist

    Ultimate Spider-Man Annual
    Brain Michael Bendis, writer
    Mark Brooks, artist

    Ultimates Annual
    Charlie Huston, writer
    Mike Deodato Jr., artist
    Ryan Sook, artist

Enjoy, as Marvel makes it Ultimate!

I'm looking forward to this because of two favorite writers, Bendis and JMS. I've enjoyed very little from Jeph Loeb, and I mean very little.

      Supreme Power hardback

I got my Supreme Power HB edition today, not taking it home yet as I've got course books with my and the d*mn bag ways 10 kilos already. I'm just wondering in terms of collected papaerbacks what it actually contains?

I'll be reading it over the w/e if I've got time.
      Phaze

"There are no good wars. War is always the worst possible way to resolve differences. It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

The Hardcover contains the first 12 issues, which were collected in 2 paperback trades: Volume 1: Contact (Issues 1-6) and Volume 2: Powers and Principalities (Issues 7-12).

Volume 3: High Command (Issues 13-18) has been out for a few months, but is not included in the hardcover.

While this sounds fun to read, there's really no Ultimate characters up to the power level of the characters in Supreme Power. I wonder how they are going to interact?

I'm not going to say it will happen the exact same way that the Avengers first met Squadron Supreme in the Marvel Universe (or the 616 universe), though it is an obvious influence.

              Oh my Christ.

              ENOUGH WITH THE FUCKING CROSSOVERS.

And while I'm at it, enough with goddamn Bendis writing EVERYTHING. Seriously, what the hell? Does Bendis have pictures of Quesada engaged in some sort of abhorrent sexual practice, that he's blackmailing him with? Some yellow discipline perhaps? STOP GIVING HIM SO MANY GODDAMN BOOKS.

The more Marvel tries to one-up DC the sadder they get. I'm sick of this "HEY! It's another great crossover / miniseries! And it's gonna majorly upset the status quo! Just like those other......18 or so.....crossovers / minis we already did this year!" crap.

Since Supreme Power is essentially a re-imagining of the Squadron Supreme, which did encounter the Avengers on a few occasions (pardon for spelling), and that the team "The Ultimates" are essentially a re-imagined Avengers, is it that suprising if they meet?

I'm in the middle about the crossover. It could be good, but then it could just be another crossover for the sake of having one. However, if this means that the "universe" that Supreme Power inhabits and the "Ultimate Universe" are merged I'll just stop reading Supreme Power all together.

Jan, is this the type of decorum allowed on this message board? This is not the first offensive posts KV has posted here and other threads. There is a way to let one's opinions be heard, but KV's "rants" repeatedly cross the line.

There are other posters whom I disagree with, but they respectful and unvitriolic in their posts. Life gives us enough negativity. This should be a place to have fun, while we agree and/or disagree.

Criticism I'm okay with, but criticizing to demean and tear down a person is uncalled for. Come on, creators are PEOPLE, they have feelings, too.

Yes it is. The specific Guideline is:

Foul language *is* permitted, as long as it is not personally directed at a user or violates the second ôruleö above. Just donÆt be too obscene or vulgar.
"...too obscene or vulgar." is a judgment call, granted, but since there's only one F-bomb, I let it go. Feel free to put him on 'Ignore'.

Keep in mind that chances are pretty slim that any of them are here, though. Plus, once you get past the childish gutter language, all he's really complaining about is the editorship over at Marvel.

I appreciate you response; I really do, Jan.

I don't take for granted that you responded to my specific request/inquirie.

I respect your unwillingness to censorship one's responses. Censorship is very dangerous to society as a whole; I abhor censorship.

Individuals, and that's all we are, really, have a right to express our displeasure with how a character is respresented. I disagreed how Spider-Man/Peter Parker was represented in the '90's that I altogether stopped reading comics. I feel criticism should be criticism -- and not an attack on the person.

Again, I appreciate your consideration and thought. Kudos.

KV, your comments hit a sensitive spot. You are entitled to your views, more power to you. And, I sincerely hope your reading experiences are enjoyable.

                      Good day, KV & Jan.

                      Happy, belated St. Pat's Day.

Thanks, manwithnoname. And your point on censorship is very well made and one I try to always keep in mind. I really try to keep moderation here as unobtrusive as possible, limiting it to deleting just a few words whenever possible.

I can't blame KV for being upset if he feels that something he cares about is being messed with. Universe knows that I felt the same way over the recasting rumors for the B5 feature film.

I just get sick and tired of people complaining about things they have control over. Howard Stern has said: They invented something called the "dial" and the "off" button.

Nobody is forcing anybody to BUY crossovers. Here's a novel concept: If you don't like reading something, then you stop reading it. This concept SOLVES a lot of problems.

I can understand someone voicing their displeasure, but if that's posting after posting of "I f* hate this." "What the f* this?" "S* nonsense is this?" This is not resembling any meaningful exchange of opinions.

Other posters and I have differing opinions, but the offer courteous, meaningful expressions of displeasure.

I could try to "ignore" his posts, but reading posts that sometime responds to his, well, it's pretty much unavoidable not to glance at someone's posts.

I await KV's response, hopefully he/she shows some civility. Otherwise, I'm extricating myself from posting on the JMSNews Forums altogether; I'm excercising my right to use the "off" button.

Entertainment/escapism: Read, watch, and listen to things you like, not to things you don't like; where's the enjoyment in that?

What hooked me onto Supreme Power, aside from the fact that some guy named Straczynski writes for it , is that it doesn't take place in the main Marvel Universe, or Marvel's "Ultimate Universe" which is a re-imagined Marvel Universe.

Supreme Power is over here doing their thing, while the others are over there doing theirs, and another is doing their stuff over there. Sorta like DC. They have the Justice League heroes and those related doing their thing over here. Over there, you have the Vertigo titles each doing their own thing, totally unrelated to each other or the main DC titles.

If this is just going to be a one time thing, like the "Superman vs. Spiderman" comic from the 70's, where Supes and Spidey meet each other, have an adventure, and at the end of the comic go their separate ways and the next issue of their respective comics makes no mention of it- Cool. It was done for fun, which could be a good read.

If the Ultimate Universe and the universe where Supreme Power takes place are brought together and stay that way, or they ret-con the idea that they've all taken place in the same universe, count me out.

If my mother had internet access and did something other than watch soap operas, she just might say "Dave, I'm proud of you for presenting your thoughts clearly and objectively without saying 'Shit,[MODERATOR EDIT-highlight to read more vulgarity]
Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker and Tits
                            '". Whoops. Too late.

MODERATOR'S NOTE: Okay, children, we're not in the school yard trying to impress the other kids with all the dirty words we know...

Forgive what might be a naive question from somebody who doesn't really understand the different comics 'universes' but...why?

I mean, with all the talk about universes and retconning and reimagining etc., wouldn't it just be simpler for readers to accept each title for what it is, logical or not, continuity or none and just enjoy or drop them as they come?

Like I said, it's probably a naive question but maybe somebody can explain it.
