Amazing Spider-Man #527 Part 9 of 12:
Mike Deodato, Jr is the artist, and does another great job. This twelve parter is called The Other; we get to meet The Other...or do we?

JMS has stated he likes to write long monologues for characters. The conversation Peter has with...some thing...is one of the longest monologues I can recall. This is not a bad thing whatsoever. It definitely is creepy, foreboding and mysterious. Their conversation answers some questions JMS laid down in the very beginning of his Spider-Man run, and does what The Maker does best -- raises more questions. This could only lead to MORE great JMS Spider-Man stories.

Jan, and for anybody else out there, Spider-Man is my favorite character of all time. The comics industry in the '90's experienced a boom in sales, selling millions of comics. For me the stories suffered and became too unbearable, I left comics cold; so did a lot of people. Marvel and DC went from selling millions for their top 3 titles to less than 100,000 copies for their top 3 titles.

JMS is announced as the NEW Amazing Spider-Man writer. I buy his first issue. Devoured it. Wept over it. (Yeah, I admit.)

JMS is responsible for revitalizing the Spider-Man franchise. And, this is not just my opinion. Wizard magazine, back in the day, had a story stating within JMS' first year of writing Spider-Man subscriptions doubled.

Recently I've been reading folks saying that JMS doesn't have the gift for dialogue that Joss Whedon has and I really think it's comparing apples and oranges. Yeah, Joss has a style that's snappy and fun but JMS is the one who ends up having his characters say things that are memorable. Sometimes you've just got to have a speach or soliloquy to really flesh out where they're coming from. Personally, I'll take "...so here we are, victims of mathematics" over "I may be dead, but I'm still pretty." any day.

I think that JMS's style fits Peter/Spidey nicely because we've always known Peter to be a thinker. He has perfectly human, sometimes flawed emotional reactions to things but he also tries to figure things out and come to conclusions that he'll carry forward in his life and relationships.

I'll enjoy seeing what JMS has come up with this time.

I love Joss Whedon's writing on Astonishing X-Men. I know you've mentioned you read all JMS' comics, but Joss' X-Men stories are spectacular.
I agree with your comparison of apples and oranges.
Joss could never write Book of Lost Souls, especially Supreme Power; JMS could never write the Asonishing X-Men the way Joss did. I'm not saying JMS couldn't write the X-Men, he most absolutely could; if you read Astonishing X-Men #1 through 12 then you know what I'm talking about.

Peter is, first and foremost, a thinker. He's a science geek, inventing his spider web. Stan Lee wrote stories of Peter tinkering with a chemistry set. Now, Peter is a part-time science teacher, when he does show up for class.
I love the fact JMS has Peter teaching science class. I hope JMS showcases more stories with Peter involved in the school environment. The past stories revolving around Peter and school JMS did were very moving.

Poor JMS...I'm sure Buddy's going to be insufferable with all the adulation he'll be getting. He'll probably get his own website before JMS does.

I suppose you can't tell us if Jonathan's cat will get his own cover, can you? Is it hard interpretting body language for a cat?

No, it's not. I've had the same cat for 17 years. He is very expressive and smart.
