Ok I finally took screen shots of the versions . . . it definitely was croped. but take a look!!

NOTE: Widescreen is from the TV Premiere DVD and The Fullscreen is from Babylon 5: The Movie Collection.

Thanks for the help everyone . All the releases (The movie Collection, The Gathering/In the Beginning, and TV Premiere DVD) for the pilot are TNT's special edition, its just the TV Premiere DVD is in "widescreen". It will be funny to take a screen shot of the two formats and put them side by side. I'll probably do that in the next few days.

No, the original version was never released on DVD officially, though I've heard that some bought in the UK might have had it for the first pressing. When Columbia House released it, a few also were sent out from there.

I think you're right about the designation, Trutter. I'd forgotten them doing the inexpensive releases of various series.

I like the TNT version better. More character moments.

I think the "TV Premiere" designation was one WHV (warner home video) was trying to brand for other series as well: ie: Friends, Drew Carey, etc. Unfortunately you are correct, it isn't the TV Premiere, but rather the edited version.

As much as I dislike Tamlyn's performance in the original version, I still prefer the original over the TNT version... maybe its just the memories of being excited for so long to see the original pilot.

I have two copies of "The Gathering". One is on the recent movies DVD and the other was a two sided DVD that I got a while back (side two is "In the Beginning"). I didn't really pay much attention to see if the two sided version was the same as the movie DVD. I'm just guessing that the two sided DVD was old / original version?

What I don't get is them calling it a 'TV Premier' when it's the re-edited version.

I'm by no means an expert on widescreen. A user over at dvdeastereggs.com, called "dvdjunkie", and another user "OARman", are the experts.

Basically, you're correct. From what I've been able to find, The Gathering wasn't filmed in a similar aspect ratio as the rest of B5. All that was done for this release, was slap a couple black bars on it and claimed it was widescreen. You lose some of the material shown on screen, and the end result looks like a badly cropped job.

MGM had a lawsuit filed against them a while back about this practice in regard to about 300 or so DVDs.

    TV Premiere DVD

    Hey Everyone!!!

If there is another thread about this subject, I appologize, but since I could not find one here is my question.

I just bought, once again, the 5 seasons of Babylon 5 on DVD *dances*. They are really great and I got them from a canadian seller on ebay. well as a bonus, he threw in the TV Premiere DVD edition of "The Gathering" the pilot for the show.

If you dont know what the TV Premiere DVD is, then here is a link to the item and the review at the bottom says it all. The Dvd is in a widescreen Format

Now dont post saying "it was originally filmed in a standard format" because I already know that. It looks as if they just slapped the bars on the top and bottom of the show, but I can't tell for certain. if anyone has info on what they did to make it widescreen I would like to know . . . I will probably take screenshots of each version when I buy the movie collection, but I was . . .

    Just Curious,
    Laiden
