  • Another look at "The Hand"

Suppose "The Hand" were to the Vorlons as the Drakh were to the Shadows?

We have always known that the Shadows were bad guys who left bad stuff in the B5 universe to mess things up, but we also know that the Vorlons were just as bad as the Shadows - and so we can assume that they had followers just as fanatical and just as powerful.

We never saw them in the B5 universe, per se, as we saw the Drakh. However, the JMS law of symmetry says that the Vorlon equivelent of the Drakh must exist.

I propose The Hand is that unknown race which exists because logic says it must. I have no reason other than the facts that the race should logically exist, and the only race we cannot currently account for in the B5 system is The Hand, to back this up.

Thanks to "tomfoster_2003-1" on the IMDB boards for bringing up this possibility.
I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone .. our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit .. that the part of me that is going .. will very much miss the part of you that is staying.

    Another look at "The Hand"

I've been giving your theory a good deal of thought and I believe your on to something here . There must be a minion race for the Vorlons as well but some would say the Mimbari are that minion race. However, I think they are a much younger race than the Drakh and if The Hand was bannished or imprisioned in Third Space, then it would stand to reason that another race would take their place at the Vorlons side. So all in all I think your theory has some merit and may lend a hand (pardon the pun) to understanding where the Lotr arc was going.

I would say that allmost all minor races were Vorlon's minions. That was the whole idea of the conflict between Vorlons and Shadows. Vorlons wanted obedience from all minor races, while the Shadows wanted them to fight each other and only those with the greatest potential for conquest would get to be their minions.

I don't think it's a "race". The telepaths i think is represented as the opposite force to the Drakh. And that the telepath war will not only rage on Earth, but on all worlds. Just as the Drakh will rage on similar worlds.

        I'ts just a different enemy.

The Technomages are the Shadow equivalent of the telepaths. They have similar powers but done a different way.

Well, my point was that the Drakh were actual minions to the Shadows. They knew who and what the Shadows actually were, and the Shadows did not seem to be hiding anything from them.

Answers like the telepaths and all the younger races do not propose a real analogue to the Drakh because the Vorlons did not trust of confide in either group as the Shadows did the Drakh.

I would note that there is some evidence that the Drakh themselves are not necessarily a race, though they seem to be made up primarily of a single race, so their mirror images on the Vorlon side might not be a single race epr se. However, they would have to have enough independence of action to be able to survive the departure of the Vorlons, as did the Drakh, so they cannot just be a bunch of people like Sebastion, who was an agent (like Morden) not an ally.

Which may be why the Hand are referred to (at least in the lurker's guide) as "the Hand of God", which may be indicative of how the Vorlons displayed themselves to the younger races. Interesting thought (the analogue beween the Hand and the Drakh), though, hey?

In "The Legend of the Rangers", seems to indicate that the Hand were some sort of transdimensional beings like those from Thirdspace. Where's Lyta when you need her?

Here's something I need to watch Rangers again for the sole purpose of examining this angle: but are we ever told specifically that the underground city and the dimensional gateway G'Kar talks about is indeed where The Hand is/was? Or is all that we get the minions of The Hand destroying the colony on the planet with the underground city for potentially another reason that we would have eventually learned about? I can't remember Kafka ever saying that The Hand were locked away in that dimensional gate (but it has been a while since I last watched Rangers), so could it be that it's just something we were lead to jump ahead of the story and think but would have ended up being a plot twist later down the road?

                    Would JMS do that?

First, in the lotr they were also referred to as "the hand of 'god'" iirc.
Second, don't forget that in thirdspace lyta said that the vorlons built the artifact to get closer to the face of 'god'. So I think it 's got nothing to do with how they displayed themselves to to younglings.

Btw, I liked the appearance of the vorlons in the second psi corps trilogy book. Nice way to cast the arc from the teeps to them.
                      What's up Drakh?
