I have recently decied to start collecting autographs by mail and was wondering if anybody on this sight knew if any of the main cast honored those request and if so in what ways (Actual signature, autopen, presigned, secratarial, etc). Any help on this matter would be greatly apriciated.
IIRC, Pat Tallman and Jeffrey Willerth set up the Galactic Gateway to help keep track of some of the B5 (and other series) actors. I think they have autographed pictures for sale there. Here's the link: http://www.thegalacticgateway.com/
Whilst I have many autographs from B5 (including JMS and John Copeland) and most of them HAVE been from UK convention appearences, I have had some back in the mail. They were from Jerry Doyle, Mira Furlan and Peter Jurasik. Jerry's came from his fan club/appreciaition society so I assume he is officially connected to it in some way. However, both Mira and Peter not only sent me autographed photos (3 in Mira's case!!! - 2 of her as Delenn and a really stunning one of her out of her character's latex make-up and in a fabulous black number that certainly turned my head! ) What really made them stand out to me were the personal notes, hand written personally by them for me. Such care. That said, it didn't occur to me to include an S.A.S.E. but I did enclose two international reply coupons to cover return postage.
I suppose I was lucky because when I wrote off, the B5 production office was still running because B5 was still an on going product. Quite who you would right to now is up in the air.
Autographed trading cards are another possibility.Like Jan said you will have to pay for them another possibility is ebay but beware of the scam artists and forgeries.
I'm afraid that I don't know much about autograph collecting by mail as all of mine have come from actors attending conventions. Putting together some things I've read about it for various authors/actors/celebs, though...
1- If you're looking for an autographed picture, you'll have to expect to pay for it because the celebs pay to have them made. If you hope for a free autograph, you probably should send an item to be signed, such as an index card.
2- Send a polite note thanking them for their time and effort and be specific if you want it personalized. Telling them how you enjoy their work can't hurt, of course. <g>
3-always enclose a return envelope, postage paid, addressed to yourself so that the celeb can send it back without any bother.
How to contact the actors is another thing. Very likely a good place to start would be through their fan clubs. There's usually one that's an official, actor-involved club that would be the best bet to try.
Another way might well be via a website. Many (most?) of the B5 actors sell pre-signed autographed pictures via a company which does small sites for them called "Time Machine" http://www.timem.com/ but they also often have other sites of their own or which are run by devoted fans.
Sorry I can't be of more help with this. Hope you have fun and get to correspond with other fans as well as the stars.
