FYI: I buy DVDs in England, not Germany (this is because I do not speak German, but still need R2 DVDs).

I have both "The Gathering" (original cut) and "In the Beginning". They were released separately (as 2 separate DVDs) before the series and not included in upcoming movie pack. Both are barebones DVDs, no commentaries or any extras.

It seems to me, that 1998-edit of "The Gathering" will not be released in R2 at all . So maybe I will buy R1 release sooner or later.

Why not? During the USSR years many jewish people took russian family names just to avoid problems with the authorities. So maybe these family names will stay for the future. Or she's not 100% jewish?

Well, being a foreigner in Germany I must say that nobody from Germans, French and English people around put an accent correctly in my own family name. I got used to that and don't correct them - maybe it was the same with the character of Ivanova

Did you happen to see the episode in which a "news reporter" from ISN called her "Eye-van-o-va"? (Sorry, I can't think of another way to phonetically show the long "I", as in "eye"). The look she gave the reporter said it all.

When I first started watching more Babylon 5 instead of just the first season which I first saw in college, it was after I took my 19th century Russian writers course in my senior year.

From what I remember from my readings, Russian names have 3 names: the first name, the middle name or patronymic which is taken after the father ("son of" or "daughter of"), then the surname or the family name.

I'm not trying to be anal, but for a while when I started watching Babylon 5 again, I'd always wonder what Ivanova's family name was. Then with further study, I learned that the patronymic is used by family and close friends, and that you can have a whole string of nicknames depending on the level of affection your family has for you. Then I mentally said "to hell with all this name stuff, enjoy the damn show" and I've since been treated to an excellent series

The Russian language, as do some other European languages, has a different way of dealing with strangers (or others) and close friends.

For example, among close friends and informally, Susan Andreevna Ivanova would have been addressed using a dimuitive form of Susan...Suzhecka or the likes. In formal situations and among subordinates she would be addressed as "Susan Andreevna" with the last name probably omitted. At least that is the way it works with a teacher I've studied with "Nikolai Aleksevich Myshkin", known among his students politely as "Nikolai Aleksevich".
