I don't know why I wrote it - I was going to write how I love B5 and adore the B5 universe, but instead got into something like "Me! Me! Me! and a little about B5".

I too found it a very interesting read. At least in the B5 universe there is only one President Clark. In ours it seems almost every political leader is having a shot at it.

I too first encountered B5 via a magazine article. I picked it out because it had an item about the Star Wars prequels arriving in 1997. (a little off the mark).
I was in a hurry and scan read it and picked up on Ivanova being (originaly) from Russia and got it into my head that the whole show was a Russian rip off of Star Trek.

I too first saw Infection ( IMO Grey 17 is Missing is much worse, I don't mind Infection) but I didn't get hooked until I saw In The Shadow Of Zha'Ha'Dum. Then I had to get my hands on the earlier episodes and by season 3 I was adicted.

Well, maybe we just don't know about other "Clark"s in B5 universe?

I was in a hurry and scan read it and picked up on Ivanova being (originaly) from Russia and got it into my head that the whole show was a Russian rip off of Star Trek.

Initially I thought that Ivanova is quite unnatural character (as Russian): normally she should be ivanOva (not ivAnova), plus she behaves too good for a Russian

But now I think that she's quite real, after all, who knows what will happen in Russia in the future, may be something good at last. And since English influence on Russian language is quite glrowing - I can imagine that accents will change over the centuries.

In fact, this one of the few occations where I'm proud to be a Russian too.

Well i don't think Grey 17 is Missing is that bad,of course comparing it to to any other episode is a no no,but still,as an episode to itself its really good i don't know why people hate it so much.

In terms of the story Ivanova's accent is down to her 'foreign' education. Her brother in 'In the Beginning' has an appropriatly Russian sounding accent as does her father. (not sure how authentic those accents are alex_t perhaps you could let us know.)
Grey 17 is Missing. The duel to the death bit (though already done in 'Knives') isn't too bad. But the whole buisness actually in Grey 17 itself is so badly written and acted (apart from Jerry but he always delivers the same performance anyways) The creature effects are awful. And the premise wasted. We already know that something odd is happening in grey sector as it is foreshadowed in crumbs, "Knives" again. I thought the reason that Morden's Shadow friends could slip in and out of the station so easierly was because B5 was their base of operations too, right under everyones noses.( Now that would have been a good idea.) instead we get Robert Edlund delivering a sixth form essay on William Blake and the application of his work to Minbari mysticsm. (and a man in a rubber suit, and a gun introduced in scene 1 that is going to be used sometime later in the same episode) Not JMS's finest hour (but not his worse, Legend of the Rangers knocks it into a cocked hat) The episode really upsets the flow of season 3 too. Anyway rant over.

Well, how do you expect me to compare accents?

Mine is different, but theirs is also acceptable. At least I see nothing unusual in their accents. "Susochka" sounds a little weird, but in fact Susan is not Russian name, so her friendly nickname can sound like that (Lytachka, Elisabetik - he-he).

Grey 17 is Missing.

It is weak, but not so bad. And kind of redeemed by Delenn/Marcus/Neroon story.

BTW, I have one question. At the end of February in UK WB will release European "movie pack" (Thirdspace / River of Souls / A Call To Arms ).

I wonder - is it worth buying? I have some concerns about all of three movies actually:

1. Thirdspace - they suddenly find a whole new dimension with whole new race and they are able to defeat it - all in 92 minutes. Sounds kinda stupid. But then again - it has Ivanova.

2. River of Souls - I did not like the soul hunters in the series. Plus space-brothel??? Huh? Is it TNT forced movie or what?

3. A Call To Arms - I heard a lot of reviews, that the script is weak and too straightforward. Plus it is kind of pilot to unfinished series.

So... do you think it is worth buying?

I learned something about myself while watching the movies recently: that my expectations colored my judgment quite a bit the first time I watched them. Non of the movies is anything like the series so that caused me to not like them a little. None of them (except ACtA) really did anything to move the arcs forward, another negative mark. And so on and so forth. Now, watching them simply to enjoy another slice of B5, I like them *much* better.

Thirdspace has some excellent effects and is something completely different from what we've seen before. Plus it has the elevator scene. And Lya has a *really* bad hair day! <g>

River of Souls has Lochley and we start to get to know her better. And why not a space-brothel? We've pretty much seen all the other vices moved into space, haven't we?

A Call to Arms is a great lead-in to Crusade and introduces some cool characters, some of whom we see in Crusade. Don't know what 'too straightforward' means. There's only one very small mystery that I remember at all.

One reason for each of the movies was for JMS to experiment some. Sometimes that'll be a hit, other times not, same as with his more experimental episodes on B5.

I think it's worth buying for the stories, for the commentaries and for completeness.

What about The Gathering and In the Beginning? Even if you have them already, do you have the commentaries? Or are they being released seperately in another release?

I smell something fishy too. Ivanova - jewish last name? Ivanov(a) is a typical russian last name (although the name Ivan comes from hebrew Yeohanan or Johanan in English or John as you know it these days). Do you remember Rabi Kozlov that've visited Susan?
Kozlov is also no jewish last name... And as far as I can tell - she is no russian jew (trust me - I'm former russian and currently israeli jew).

^_^ It looks funny, but I'm glad that even jews have their place at Babylon 5 ^_^.

Unfortunately the movie collection in Europe doesn't include "In the Beginning" or "The Gathering". Not entirely sure why this is (these have been released separately but without the new commentaries et al). Suffice to say I imported my copy (I was about to do the same for Crusade as I don't think it's even been announced over here yet, but in the vain hope of JMS's commentary being restored to its full glory, I'm holding off for the UK version...)
