  • unproduced Crusade: Tried and True?

I knew of (even read when they were legally available online) the three unproduced episodes "Value Judgements", "To the Ends of the Earth" and "The End of the Line."

But what about "Tried and True"?
Is there a comment about this one in the DVDs?
What would be the episode synopsis?

    Any info would be appreciated.

I remember reading the three scripts when they were available (legally) on a website. I just can't remember the name of it off hand. Real good stuff. IIRC there was a script out there by Fiona Avery that was never filmed. Maybe "Tried and True" was that script.

I bet Jan would be able to clear this up in short order.

This, from another thread in the forum:

<<Here's a couple more Crusade episodes from season one that never saw the light of day:
War Story (episode 19) by Richard Mueller and The Walls of Hell (episode 20) by Larry DiTillio were supposed to be the first two parts of a loosely-connected trilogy, with JMS writing episode 21 to wrap it up. I don't think either script should have been finished because TNT had already pulled the plug by then, but I believe Mueller finished his script and handed it in anyway.>>

        That was from Nazzaro.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

It is this the trilogy that was to focus on Dureena and that sword mentioned in "End of the Line"?

one of them, yes. She wrote 4 scripts for the first season - Well of Forever, Patterns of the Soul, value judgements (unaired), and Tried and True, which would have been the 3rd part of a trilogy of episodes, reintroducing Dureena (End of the Line references the Sword she found in that episode).

Omaha's right. Unfortunately, Tried and True never made it to the light of day. When Fiona was selling her Crusade scripts online I tried to buy a copy of T&T but never got a response.

Some good brief summaries of these eps on worldsofjms.com

For more spoiler oriented stuff isnnews.com had long bits with "Fair use" quotes scattered.

Sigh. But I hadn't heard of Tried and True, and just hearing about anoter ep makes me sad.

Everyone has it about right, but Tried and True was not part of the "trilogy" sequence, it was a stand alone story about Dureena being held by her Thieves Guild mentor, Mafeek. The script was pretty much just Dureena and Mafeek together in a guild space station. Mafeek and others in the guild were concerned about Dureena running around with Earthforce. In the story Dureena had to explain herself, and her actions.

The reason it was never released by Fiona, is because it was never truly finished. (It may have gotten as far as a first draft, but that's it.)

She talked about it in some detail in the Babylon 5 magazine. I think it was issue 17 of the magazine, with Bruce Boxlietner and the Excalibur ship on the cover. Old copies may be around on Ebay or something.

                      update

I checked, and yes it was B5 Magazine issue 17 from November of 1999.

In the interview on page 57 Fiona says, "Tried and True, my last script, is a bottle show... about Dureena and her Thieves Guild patron, Mafeek. It's kind of a graduation piece, where Dureena in one sense comes of age and becomes more than an apprentice. And it's a battle of wills: Will Mafeek continue letting her run around with Earthforce? Does Dureena trust Mafeek? And in the final analysis, is there something between them even greater than trust?"

I found this timeline a while ago. If it is correct, CordwainerHawk is right.
Tried and True is the episode where Nafeek interrogates Dureena, and it's not part of the 'Sword Arc'

There's no longer any legal way that I'm aware of. <moderator speak> Any discussion of how to get them other ways needs to be done by PM or email, please. </moderator speak>

Wouldn't it be great if they were published with the short stories?
Or should we keep them separated? What do you think?
