  • Jms postings (December)

I'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, I'm still catching up with recent threads.

Just been picking through Jms' posts this month. Nothing major, as usual, except a couple of tit bits. I'm still doubtful about that 'Production Weekly' announcement, I'll wait till I see it from an official source.

    ...snip..

Since it's no longer an issue, because the show was not picked up, the series
I'd mentioned that had come to me to talk about coming aboard as an EP was
    Warren Ellis' Global Frequency.
    Thats that then.

One last aside, on a long term project...a certain known film writer/director
was recently asked by a particular studio to do a series using an established
character. This person is a big fan of B5 as well as a friend, so a call came
to me to ask if I wanted in on this. I said hell yes. I can't say much else
about it, because a) it wouldn't be appropriate and b) things can still fall
out, though that's doubtful at this stage (negotiations have formally begun
with the studio), but if it does go ahead, the plan is to write the whole first
season over the course of 2005, shoot in the spring of 2006 for a fall 2006
debut. There are reasons why we'd have to write the whole thing first that
will become clear once I can explain what the character is. Again, I dont want
folks to get too excited about this, because this is a weird business and this
is the one town where hope can kill you, but if it goes ahead as discussed, it
    could be massively cool.
Er, could well be Star Wars, but he specifically says it's about an established character. (Not characters )

He also says it'll become clear once he can explain what the character is. Could be Jedi, but could also be something like Terminator ? (just something off the top of my head)

Bit worried about the time scale mentioned. I presumed in 2005 and 2006 Jms would be concentrating on TMoS.

[Warners came to me last year about a possible B5 animated series, but I don't
think it's going to go anywhere. This happens every couple of years.
This was clearly one of the 'other projects' and what many of us had guessed it to be. Sadly it looks doubtfull.

Finally, because there is a lot of stuff that's going to be popping this coming
year, I've decided to end my hermit period and barnstorm a number of
    conventions in 2005.

    ..snip..

So there will be FedCon in Bonn, Germany, the Comics Expo in Bristol England,
and a bucket of comics conventions here in the US. I may also do a few
non-comics cons, depending on what comes along, before ducking back into my
shell for another couple of years.
Well "a lot of stuff going to be popping this year" will most likely be the beginning of the circus for TMoS. Obviously starting with an official announcement, and Jms doing a few cons, to presumably do a little promoting of the new project among other things. Then it looks clear the film production will finally get going for the couple of years he mentions.

All said and done, fairly encouraging. Shame about the animation, but the Tv show sounds promising.

As an aside - he didn't specify whether it was a sci-fi thing or not. May be his established gig and arena, but keep an open mind. It's hard for me to come up with a singular character focus in sci-fi. Easier in fantasy, maybe. Much easier elsewhere.

    Much easier comic-book land, actually.

When I read this, I was thinking "Superman".

Actually, I was thinking Spiderman. Given the success of the movies, it would be ripe for a series (again ), and JMS would be a natural given his involvement with the character already.

It might be the much rumoured return of The Prisoner.

That sounds like a sensible guess to me.

As I read this I got the same "twinge" that I got the instant I read the suggested title "The Memory of Shadows." Dunno why.
I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone .. our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit .. that the part of me that is going .. will very much miss the part of you that is staying.

I'm hoping Joe was talking about the 1970 TV series "The Immortal" with Christopher George. That show was "off-the-chart" cool. And that's "cool."

But was it "Mentos Cool?" That's the REAL test!
