  • Legend of the Rangers (the 2nd viewing)

I've just seen LotR for the second time. The first time was a bit of a dissapointment but I guess the novelty of a new Babylon project prevented me form totally disliking it.
This time I gringed almost all the way through it.
The characters were dull, some of the acting was amateurish at best, the set design was terrible, the plot was (for JMS) definatly not upto standard and the dialogue was smothered in exposition.
The alien rangers spoke in the same patronising faux reverential fashion that native American characters used to use in really bad westerns. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the punch/kick weapons interface is totally silly, it neither looks good or makes sense. And loosing the original B5 CGI models is no excuse for the lack of continuity in design. If the Minbari city models and Interstellar Alliance models were not to hand why not rebuild them rather than totally redesigning them?
As much as I love Andreas, G'Kar was just a camp after-thought in this film. And the back story to the villains, I know some people have claimed that given time and a chance it would have evolved into something different, but as a stand alone story it threw all the menace and wonder of the First Ones from B5 onto the floor and did unspeakable things to it from a great height. Crusade (even when horribly messed about by TNT) had believable performances and storylines that drew one in and a look and feel which, though fresh and new,had enough of the old to carry the bright flame of B5 forward. LotR looks like a very bad episode of Andromeda minus the style and wit (Marge! in case you didn't notice I was being ironic). I really hope JMS gets the film right . It would be a shame if this was the shape of things to come, and not as I hope a 'Grey 17 is Missing' sign of an overworked writer. (I understand JMS was very busy at the time of writing LotR and it shows) I've heard it said that pilots are often not brilliant, but this isn't a total start from scratch story. It is a continuation of a show with a long and successful heritage. The project when announced really got my hopes up for a revival of the B5 universe after the sad loss of Crusade and the few iffy episodes of season 5. If tMoS fails it would pretty much end all hope of any new B5 projects. I have my fingers knees teeth and eyes crossed that it is a success.
I have the wings for Bingo.

      Teeth too? Wow.

I dunno, it seems kind of negative to start assuming that just because something isn't to your taste that it bodes ill for the future.

Rangers *was* effectively starting from scratch because it was a whole new set of characters in a pilot on a whole different network. Pilots are pretty much always going to be overly full of exposition. They're also a way to test what works and what doesn't. Personally, I enjoyed the story, liked the characters, loved seeing a lighter G'Kar. The only thing I'd've changed was the incessant 'We live for the ...." repetitions. Your mileage obviously varied.

That about sums it up, although I did like some of the acting/characters (mainly Dulann, Na'Feel, & Firell).

I agree with most of what Shr'eshhhhhh says, except for the villain part. I am a part of the faction that believe that they would have been something we can't guess, probably not as powerful as first ones but tough enough

On the other hand (no pun intended!), I didn't like the haunted ship story at all. I don't think it belongs in the B5 universe, even taking soul hunters into account.

Blaine Edwards and Anton Merryweather on Legend of the Rangers:

            "Hated it!"

But hey, I'm still going to buy it when it comes out. We need to pump money into the Babylon Project any which way we can.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

The funny thing is that was one idea I DID like but I wasn't to keen on the execution of the idea. If it was done Solaris, the Shining or even Event Horizon stylee (minus the gore) it would have been an interesting twist. But the ghosts in the show came across as being neither frightening or tragic. In fact they came across more as blatent plot devices.
JMS usually does a brilliant slight of hand which introduces vehicles for plot progression which are in their own way sufficiently fascinatingly drawn that you really notice that, that is the function they serve.
On LotR you could see the stitching, you could see the digital watch on the wrist of the puppeter, I still think it was a very busy period in JMS's career and he really didn't have the time to devote to the project that he would normally like. (I prepare to stand correct by those in the know, I wasn't there) It felt like they filmed the first draft of a script lines like (and I paraphrase here folks) "You maybe an expert on weaponary but you have yet to fully adopt our ways." Just stick out like a saw thumb if any of us talked like that they'd drag us off . (if this happens Id like it known I'm vegetarian so no corned beef sandwiches please. even if the mustard is right.)

Every time I eat a corned beef sandwich now, I have to say "There is too much mustard. It tends to burn the corners of my mouth." And then I wipe my mouth and people at work look at me like I'm crazy.

And then I get to play Captain Jack Smiley when I drink OJ. "Here. I told them to leave the pulp in. That's the best part." They're like "Uh, who are they?"

And all that time, not one person has realized that I'm using B5 lines.

And they bother with TV movies? Okay. I don't do news (real or entertainment) or newspapers or magazines or talk shows or reality shows or...well, most other media either so I miss a whole lot of popular references.

But still... you mean people actually pay attention to critics? Wow...

It was a recurring sketch on Fox's variety show In Living Color. They were too very effeminiate gay men who'd hate movies unless they had some kind of homoerotic overtone to them. They'd scream "Hated it!" and snap their fingers in a "Z formation" for movies they really liked. Damon Wayans was Blaine and David Alan Grier was Anton Merryweather. Every time it was something different...Men on Film, Men on TV, Men on Books, etc.

No, they never did LoTR...that was just a joke on my part.

Nice to keep positive, but I don't think I agree with his claim that football took that much audience away. There can't be too big of a crossover audience between American football and science-fiction. Hell, football barely affects WWE wrestling's ratings, which would show a stronger resemblence to a possible crossover with football.

The markets that did the best were B5 fans tuning on in. He had the hardcore fans no matter what, but the key is to get the viewers who aren't hardcore, be they football fans or prime time TV fans.
