B5 in Japan

    B5 in Japan

    Hi There,

    I am new to this whole game, but I checked the search engine here and also google and others and have found next to nothing about this.

    I was wondering if anyone new if B5 was ever or will ever be translated into Japanese.
    I spent many a night up late at night in college totally falling in love with B5, and wanting to share that with my wife and some friends here I have spent a bit of time looking for B5.

    All I have found is a a re-edited version of "Voices in the Wilderness" called Space Guardian or some such nonsense.

    any info would be appreciated.

    I don't recall seeing anything about a Japanese translation but if I do, I'll be sure to post it here.

      That's funny that you mention this.

      B5 is my favorite show and I have used it to learn new languages.

      When I was learning Spanish, I found episodes dudded in that language and it helped.

      Now I am learning Japanese so I would appreciate anyn information you obtain on what can be found of B5 in Japanese.

          Yeah, I have done the same thing in some ways. There are a couple of favorite movies from my childhood that I have watched here in Japan. Having so much of the dialog stuck in my head already has always helped me pick up some new phrases here and there.

          I think its just certainly not a science to translate English to Japanese. so things always get a bit strange in the translation. I would love to see how Babylon 5 would work in translation though.

              Watching movies or TV with subtitles in your native language can be helpful to learn the other language. It certainly helped me learn a bit more English before I came to the USA. I've thought several times of using the foreign language subtitles on DVDs for help in learning other languages, just haven't had much chance.

              I don't like "telenovelas" but curiously in some of those in Telemundo if you turn on the Closed Captioning option on your TV you'll see the closed captions with the English translation of the Spanish language dialog...

              I've never seen B5 dubbed into Spanish, BTW.

              But translation is an art... and indeed you'll find some strange things and imprecisions.
              I don't have a comparison not knowing Japanese, but in most anime series and movies I've watched I thought the English translation was good. So I think there is a group of people that could make a good translation of B5 to Japanese.

                I picked up on some Japanese watching Japanese pro wrestling, including WAR, FMW, NJPW, AJPW to name a few. It's funny because the two commentators in WAR would go:

                #1: Eezu mao chu me la hong!

                #2: Hai.

                #1: (Long rant)

                #2: Hai!

                #1: (Another long rant)

                #2: HAI!!

                #1: (Long rant)

                #2: Eeeeeeeeeh.

                I guess his only job was to agree with the other guy.

                Also bizarre were the crowd reactions. In the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe, during a tag team match, there is a standard thing where they go with a "hot tag." They let the bad guy team beat up on a good guy for a good ten minutes and then he rallies back and makes the "hot tag" to the fresh good guy, and the crowd goes wild as he cleans house. If someone like Jushin Thunder Lyger, one of their biggest stars, gets a hot tag, there is no noise whatsoever. I can't figure out what makes the crowd cheer when they do.

                Also, when Star Wars was first screened in Japan, Lucas thought that the dead silence was a bad thing, when in fact it was a high compliment in Japan.
                Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

                  I recently watched Ju-On after watching the remake (the Grudge) but the subtitle option didn't work for some reason. I had to try to figure out what the characters were saying by remembering what went on in the inferior (though to be fair still good) remake. So english remakes can too help break the language barrier.

                    There is nothing more poetic than hearing Delenn's or G'kar speaches spoken in spanish

                    Although B5 was never released on DVD in spanish, all first four seasons were dubbed in spanish and aired on TV so you basically just have to find someone who tapped it.

                    Btw Andoryu, could you provide us with more information on the japanese version of Voice in the wilderness, where you found it and how it is written in japanese?

                      Sure I found it at the Tsutaya at my station. Tsutaya is the Japanese equivalent of a Blockbuster video. I always peruse the sci-fi section there and I just sort of came upon it. I watched it myself but hesitated to show my wife cause i feel its important to show the whole series from the beginning.

                      The Japanese title was written out in Katakana English(Katakana is a Japanese script used to write all foreign words), when you read it in Japanese it basically uses English words to say "Space Guardian" or more correctly Supesu Ga-Deiann. It was made by Warner home video Japan.

                      As for the translation, it was sub-titled so its easy for me to ignore that, but it was basically okay. There isnt too much arc stuff mentioned in that episode so no shadows or anything were mentioned.

                      The opening was a little different, but its been a while since ive seen it so I cant comment too confidently.

                      Also I have recently(like ten miutes ago) learned that Babylon 5 is now making its debut in Japan on a cable network called StarChannel. It started three weeks ago and is playing from season 1.
                      Could this be good news for the proliferating of B5 into foreign markets in advance of TMOS! I definitely hope so!

                      But on a down note I dont have cable here. So I cant get my wife and friends hooked. Whats a weepy gaijin to do!
