  • What Do You Want? Why Are You Here?

OK, I was enjoying seeing the origins of peopleÆs user names, and it occurred to me that we were often providing one possiuble answer to ôWho Are You?ö Since weÆve tackled that, the next obvious question is ôWhat Do You Want?ö An appropriate version of that seems to be, ôWhat do you hope to get by pariticpating in these discussion boards?ö It also works for ôWhy Are You Here?ö I thought IÆd see if people were interested in talking about that, so I figured IÆd start and see where it goes.

JMS often touched upon the theme of forming communities. Babylon 5 was the first TV show for me that managed to do that. When it was on the air, we had a group of people that would gather, watch together, and then discuss. Many of those people are seperated by time and distance, but it feels like there are still things to discuss. I used to watch for postings from JMS here at jmsnews.com, and when the discussion boards appeared, it seemed natural to join in and discuss. That was a first for me. It felt a little awkward at first because I was unsure of the rules of the online world, but IÆve certainly enjoyed the conversations!

Interesting question, that. Hm. I just came from a calculus lecture and went to the store to get something to drink tonight. Just that, there wasn't anything good. I can't seem to find anything good to drink. I don't quite like beer, I don't quite like cider (them bubbles! they burnsssess uss!), coke has bubbles, too, and then there's all kinds of juices, most too bitter or too sour... In other words, there's nothing good to drink out there. So I'd like a proper drink for a change.*

Came home (first snow, yay!), checked the forums and found this question intriguing. So I am now here replying to it.

I've participated in other online communities, and enjoyed the interaction with people through this medium. It's more entertaining than watching TV, more interactive than reading a book.
You learn about things, but mostly you learn about people and their oh-so-varied points of view.

I had never joined in a community devoted to B5, and I love B5, there is still much to discuss about it indeed. I lurked in a few B5 boards, but never became a member of any.
But just as WC, seeing the forums after frequently visiting the archive, it seemed natural to join.

That B5 fans come accross as smarter and more polite than the average member of many discussion boards is also an incentive.

That's why I came here and why I'm still here.

        What do I want?

I want TMoS to start shooting! And a few more B5 projects after that.
What I really want is not a lot more B5, but many more shows that are just as smart and have quality in their storytelling and in their science fiction aspects. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Crusade restart, I'd love to see another series on the B5 universe, but I love SF as a whole much more than B5, and I'd like to see that there can be intelligent SF TV beyond B5. I came to be a fan of B5 because I love SF, and have read so much of it that anything else SF on TV fell below my standards. What I don't want is for B5 to become another watered down and disappointing SF franchise kept on life support beyond its years for merchandising purposes, that's why I say I want only a few more B5 projects. I want quality, not quantity.

P.S. I do have something (and someone) worth living for... who do I serve and who do I trust? That would be saying too much.
Such... is the respect paid to science that the most absurd opinions may become current, provided they are expressed in language, the sound of which recalls some well-known scientific phrase

Back when I first came online, one of the first things I did was explore the Babylon 5 community (especially the chat room) that was on AOL at the time. I loved being there, talking often every day for a short bit with the same people, talking about everything, but especially B5. I liked the community-ness of it. Ever since AOL got rid of that B5 room, I never kept in contact with most of them and I honestly kinda miss the tightness of the community I was in at that time.

So that's why I post on this and the B5TV board (and a few others but they aren't exactly B5 oriented). I want that sense of community again.

I also want more B5. Movies, new series, revival of old series, books, everything, I want more. More more more (provided it's all orchestrated by jms and not someone replacing him, which I know he wouldn't allow, but still, I want it coming from him).

                What I want:

-More Babylon 5 in any form I can get it. Feature films, books, animation, comics, anything.

-More JMS shows on TV. I want him to have full creative control, a workable budget, no censoring and as many episodes as he wants per season, as many seasons as he thinks best. And I want it to be shown straight through on the same channel, at a reasonable hour, in the same timeslot each week. With repeats at least once, also in a decent timeslot.

                Why am I here?:

Because I like B5 fans, basically. Like Vacanlook, I discovered the B5 community on the B5 section of AOL back when JMS used to post there. After he left there, I went over to the moderated newsgroup and enjoyed the varied and generally intelligent conversations. When I saw the DougO had created forums here, I jumped at the chance to join right away.

Why do I like B5 fans? Because, unlike so many other places, where B5 fans gather, it's to talk about what they *like* most of the time. So many other types of forums just seem to want to tear things down. What's been going on over at the Marvel Universe newsgroup is...distasteful. Sure, sometimes things don't work the way we'd like but why dwell and dwell and dwell...?

                  Who am I?

I am the living spirt of my ideas.

I can't tell you anything about me that can show you who I really am. But I can share with you my ideas, my values, everything I stand for - I can show you my world - the world I see through my eyes and the world I create around me. This world is really who I am. And when I die (many years from now (I hope )) - I hope my world won't cease to exist. JMS created the universe of B5. He put his ideas and his values into the soil of our souls and let them grow into something that we all share today.

And that's what I want - I want to share my ideas and my values with you (as I did in the "Religion" thread). I want to hope that you understand them. I want to give you a glance into the world I live in - but I'm no good at writting or any other art. So I speak.

And I speak here because those who saw B5 - understand me better.

(While I was writting - I saw this rainbow from my window... Truly a moment of a perfect beauty... )

And I suppose once you have the question, you'd want the answer, since it would have changed. Then of course, you'd need the new question once you had the new answer...
