  • Babylon5 to cinema?

    [spontaneous thoughts]

... speaking of ST II "Wrath of Khan" celebrating at the cinema.

Why the heck Babylon5 shouldn't go cinema as well?

(I'm not the first who thought about this; I'm aware.
And no one did s.th. like this before, I'm aware too)

Well, the CGI would look like undersea.
Wouldn't bother me, cause of the tears of joy seeing this happen.

Return to serious. There are some "issues":

    1. the fandom should be probed, if they and how much of them are willing to spend money for "B5 cinema"
Even nothing else but this could be done by crowdfunding, imho
    Over website(s) Opt-in

    2. WB should get interested
This is the more difficult thing.
After all we now can point to the competitor (Paramount).

    3. The appropriate period could be 25th jubilee "The Gathering" eg 2018
Beginning with "The Gathering" and continuing with about three eps. at once.
("Midnight on the Firing Line", "Soul Hunter", "Born to the Purple") etc.

As an alternative and to test the waters, there could be only one cinema event at first:
could be "In the Beginning" or selected eps. like "Wilderness 1+2" and "Babylon Squared".

I know, I'm dreaming and it's more likely such a cinema event will never happen.
But only to write this post is just FUN.

Once upon a time, JMS showed the fans at (pretty sure it was) New York Comic-Con the opening sequence for the Lost Tales. On a big screen. With a good, if not great sound system. New CGI. G'Kar's voice.

I've positively lusted for B5 like that again ever since. And in IMAX (which I generally avoid due to eye issues).

To quote Sheridan, "I want that. I want that a great deal."
"As empathy spreads, civilization spreads. As empathy contracts, civilization contracts...as we're seeing now.

Yes, obviously, I'd love to see this too. It makes me year for the fabled well budgeted 'B5 movie' even more.

I think it's the kind of thing that could be done at an SF convention, all you'd need was the relevant license to show films / episodes to a larger audience. We have a very impressive cinema society at York University that get most of the big releases and screen them in a full spec'd out lecture theatre and it looks and sound excellent.

You could conceivably do this with B5 stuff. In fact when I was at Uni, there was an SF society, and they screened 'River of Souls' when it was released. That was fun, even though my friend (non B5 fan) and I spent most of our time laughing like hyenas at Martin Sheen hamming it up.

Daydreaming for a moment, if only B5 has as large a fandom as Star Trek. Can you being to imagine!

I echo the thoughts of many people on this site that I would love to see B5 on the big screen.

As for the fandom, the unfortunate reality is that from the beginning B5 was not very well marketed. I know many people only became aware of B5 by others telling them about the series.

I was lucky to know about the series by stumbling across an article in Starlog Magazine and eagerly awaited this new series. Unfortunately I missed the original airing of the pilot, but once again stumbled across the tv listing for Midnight on the Firing Line.

Had the proper marketing been done, I'm convinced that the existing fandom would be more than 5 times bigger than what it is today. In addition we would likely be on our fifth B5 motion picture by now.

B5 definitely had the potential to be WB's 'Start Trek' in terms of success. A shame it wasn't capitalised on as much as it could have been. I stumbled across it on TV and think I saw a trailer for The Gathering on a VHS of Stargate the film or perhaps an early SG1 episode on VHS. I have no idea what the marketing was like back then, I just watched the show and didn't enegage any further than that.
