10 Years "Lost Tales"

[Remarkable reminder]

It's exact 10 years ago when the direct-to-dvd "Lost Tales" reached the public.
And it's sad but true: no other Babylon5 story did emerge in a decade.

My quiet hope is, that JMS as novelist once will publish a novel playing in the B5verse.
Which -when selling very well- potentially would pave the way toward the production of a movie.

Great Maker! Has it really been that long? I remember being so psyched for TLT, then being quite disappointed when it did finally appear, and even worse, there were no subsequent volumes. I would have loved to have seen the Garibaldi centric one that was planned. If WB had given them a larger budget, it could have been quite cool once it found its feet. Even just a few extras to make the sets look inhabited would have been nice. I wasn't mad keen on the Outer Limits style supernatural 'devil' plotline.

With B5, I am slowly coming to accept that we may as well just enjoy what we have, as I remain unsure if we'll get anything else in the B5 verse. I also flip flop a bit as to whether I want new B5, and do wonder if Joe's initial 'get in, tell the story, get out' approach is best adhered to. Even JMS seemed to come to the same conclusion after TLT, that he'd rather not make anything more, unless it was properly funded with a healthy budget and added rather than detracting from the B5 universe.

I'd still like be intrigued to see a reboot/re-imagined B5, either as a feature or a TV show, but I remain a bit unsure. I think something with a bit of a clean break from the original could have way more scope to innovate and go new places.

As an aside, was the script for the Garibaldi section of TLT ever published? [EDIT: It was in the TV Movies script book)... I found a synopsis of the Garibaldi plot and it's pretty out there . Not that sure we missed much, but hard to say without having read the script, might have provided a nice counterpoint to the 'devil' plotline.

The nuts and bolts of it is that as head of Edgars Industries, Garibaldi's attention is drawn to some excavation the company was doing on Mars. He went to personally investigate, and after a cave-in or some such he found a huge abandoned city deep underground. While there, a tall, skinny, bronze-skinned Martian appeared to him telling him something about how humanity is their children and they've been watching them and might see them again one day. The martian and the city then disappear or crumble to dust or something like that, and Garibaldi is left having had this experience alone to be rescued by rescue personnel with no proof of the existence of the Martians.

I too missed the Garibaldi story: to see acting Jerry Doyle once again as Mister Garibaldi!
(Even the tlt story seems to be a bit weak)

Think about the Babylon5 timeline.
There are quite endless possible story plots. Imho.

My opinion about retelling already told stories: it's dangerous - could get worse!
And yes an all new story out of the B5verse would be the just better deal.

I love TLT, and the Lochley segment in particular. I think it's a superb piece of writing that does amazing and complex things with religion and philosophy, reimagining Christian myth from a humanist perspective. It really influenced me as a writer.

Liked TLT for the project itself and the effects, albeit some story-elements ins both segments wehe sub-par to the original series. But if that was the last produced B5-bit ever, I'm glad that we got it, and not don't have LOTR as sad final entry.

Great Maker, was it so long ago?!

It was great to see the show again after such a long time when it came. But as have been said before, I enjoyed the storys and the CGI more than the very spartan practical sets and lack of extras.

But oh my, the station and the ships looked amazing to see in the new CGI.
But Andreas voiceover in the intro, that was tough to get through. So sad.

My theory is that the "spartan practical sets and lack of extras" was due, in part, to budget, but I think one could also surmize that it was done to show that B5 was on the downward turn. I know they were trying to do this with a small budget, but I always thought this aspect could have been attributed to the effect of the station losing some of its importance in the galaxy. Of course most of the scenes we see do take place in secure areas, so it could also be attributed to that. I know I am likely just making up a good explanation for them trying to save a few bucks, but you have to admit it is a good explanation.

B5's storyline was that there was always a cash shortage of one kind or another, and the sets, etc. reflected that.

That's one way to make the storyline match the budget.

People slate Abrams for the Trek reboot, but his TV work has been largely very good, especially Fringe. TBH, we'd be lucky to get anyone with credentials like his even showing interest in a reboot. What B5 needs is someone with influence in Hollywood to champion it and help get it made.
