  • Help my Lost Tales DVD has stopped working

Has anyone run into this before? I was watching my Lost Tales DVD on a Blu-Ray player. When it reached the last chapter it would no longer play. I took it out and examined it. The disc looks brand new. I tried it on 3 different DVD players and the disc wouldn't even load on them. I tried it on my Xbox 360 and the disc wouldn't play. I tried it on this laptop and the disc wouldn't load. So far I can get it to play on two different Blu-Ray players until it gets to the last chapter. I even decided to try to wipe it off, though it doesn't appear to have anything on it. All this did was cause some very, very light barely visible scratching to appear. It did load on one of the DVD players after I wiped it off, but it wouldn't play after it got to the menu screen.

It has been a VERY long time since I watched it, but I know that this disc played without incident at least three times in the past, if not more. I am about to order a replacement, but I thought I'd better do some research first so as to no make a purchase when they all might have some sort of defect caused by aging. Has anyone else had this problem?

Background on the Disc, Best Buy Exclusive from the initial printing stored in a cool dry place since the day it was released.

I'd just grab a digital copy from somewhere. All physical media will eventually degrade. It can sometimes be the top layer of the disc that becomes damaged, this is actually the more vulnerable part of the disc as it's not plastic coated line the underside. it has to be a REALLY deep scratch on the readable side to affect playback.

A few of the discs in my B5 box sets have stopped working with zero visible wear on them. I have a full digital achive of the series on an external hard drive. I plan to ditch my DVDs completely when I next move house. I still collect hard copy music, vinyl and CDs, so to have one less collection is a GOOD thing for me.

I am always amused when people put discs down readable side up to 'protect them from damage', it's the top side that is vulnerable to damage as it's only a thin printed later / foil.

Hope you can find a cheap replacement. Probably copies for 1 pound on Amazon.

Captain John Sheridan: I really *hate* it when you do that.

As a HEAVY investor in physical media I really never want to hear that it will degrade. In prefer to think every disc will last a least my lifetime, which will hopefully be Time Lord-esque.

The face side also appears to be fine. I think I got my answer though. Ubik is the only person who responded so I am guessing this has not been an issue others have run into. I have no problem buying another disc. It isn't as cheap as I hoped. A few months ago I am pretty sure it was going around $5 or $6. Now the cheapest is $9.99, but totally worth it. I am not a fan of Over Here, but I LOVE the updated look of everything - different but the same. And actually the only thing I dislike about Over Here is that the way they explain it in the end.

Over there I greatly enjoy despite the fact it is filled with PAINFUL reminders. Even the character of the Prince is so good he just SCREAMS where are Londo and Vir.

So it is time to buy another disc. Cross your fingers for me. And thanks for trying to help Ubik. This is yet ANOTHER reason there needs to be an investment in a Blu-Ray release, durability.

And PS Ubik, I want to invest in that external hard drive idea, but I don't trust them either. I actually almost did do that, but when I was doing some research I discovered it would be pointless until I had a new laptop. I'm not really a tech person, but I was reading reviews for different external hard drives and I learned you have to have ports that can provide the necessary power to work with them. I have a 64GB flash drive that this laptop can't work well with, so I doubt it would work too well with a large external hard drive. And yes I realize I am rambling, but I am typing sort of late at night after a long day.

If portability isn't an issue then larger external drives come with a/c power adaptor so no power is required from laptop to run them
"There are no good wars. War is always the worst possible way to resolve differences. It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

Perhaps wait till you upgrade and go with a solid state drive, those are very dependable as they have no moving parts!

Interestingly, I am about to get rid of all my B5 DVD box sets in favour of my digital back up, probably to a charity shop as CEX only pay about 1 GBP per box set. DVDs are pretty much worthless now in terms of resale value. I am trying to wean myself off of owning hard copy media apart from music. My DVDs have just sat in a box gathering dust. It's time to draw the line and get rid.
