JMS' own desk up for auction!

After the discussion last week about the desk, it's now up on Ebay!

Only a five-day auction as whoever wins the desk needs to move it out of the closed office by the end of the month.

There'a already one bid. I thought the starting bid was too low, myself. I always start my auctions at the lowest price I'm willing to accept, mainly because I hate 'reserve' auctions. I want to know if I can afford something right off.

Looks like this holiday weekend is a good one for auctions - I was taking pics yesterday of some stuff I'm going to be listing, too. Not *quite* as high end, but some cool stuff.

ETA: I don't know who'll win the desk but this post wins the thread!

Is this an artifact the guys at Warehouse 13 need to be worried about?

If I had the money, I would bid on JMS's desk with the intent of donating it to the Smithsonian. I strongly believe that JMS's desk has significant cultural importance. Regardless, I hope that whoever buys the desk is someone who truly appreciates the significance of the desk.

Only 10 hours left and bidding's only up to $660. I knew that the shipping/pick-up would have an effect but I expected it to be much higher by now.

That will be an issue for a lot of potential buys, I think. But I get the feeling there may be some canny bidding going on - like a distance race, no one wants too take the lead to early - and in the last hour or so it will start moving, and possibly quick rapidly, in an upward direction.

Absolutely. Anyone who doesn't use sniping software on eBay these days is a fool. It's frowned upon, but none the less, that's the reality of things when it comes to bidding on high value items via eBay. So, yes, you're on the money there. It'll probably go up the most in the final 10 seconds of the auction! All amounts to the same thing really, all the action just gets condensed into that final minute when it becomes clear what people are really willing to pay!

Wow. Only $721.00. I thought for sure it would go for twice that amount at least.

That was a bit surprising. There was only two additional bids and it sold for, as you say, just $721. I really thought (based on that old garage sale jms had a few years ago) that it would have gone for many thousands – even with the costs associated with picking it up.

Don't shout at me, : ) Why was Captain Jaclyn who, as she says herself in the reply runs B5books.com for jms, answering the only question in an auction jms was meant to be holding – I only mention it because some who may’ve considered purchasing the table and thought jms was holding the auction might have found it a bit strange someone calling themselves Captain Jaclyn replied! Remember, most fans haven't even heard of B5Books.com!

I guess it’s not really the most exciting of items. Even when you factor in the history and the signature, at the end of the day, it’s just a desk. I enjoy JMS’ work a great deal, but I think I’d struggle to get excited about owning this. Perhaps not the most desirable of collectables, so the price makes sense to me.

Short answer: Because she had an account that could be used on short notice. The account JMS used for the garage sale doesn't exist anymore. And anybody who doubted it was JMS holding the auction, regardless of who administered it...well, let me paraphrase G'Kar. This was JMS' desk. This is JMS' photo as he signed the desk. This is JMS' own copy in the auction. This is JMS posting on Facebook that he was selling his desk What part of that progression could escape somebody?
