I was watching one of the best B5 eps ever, Conflicts of Interest, last night and it dawned on me how great the dialogue is on B5. Take a show like ST:TNG and compare it to B5. The B5 people talk like everyday people.

Let's post in this thread some of our favorite rounds of dialogue throughout the series and movies and spinoffs.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

I love it when G'kar does narration like at the end of Z'ha"dum, or reading the ISA charter, theyre great speeches and Andreas delivers them extremely well
There is a greater darkness than the one we fight, its is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way.

Well, yeah, they are great, but I was going for like exchanges between characters.

I agree with both of you - JMS is often accused of writing dialogue badly, but I couldn't disagree with that sentiment more. I love his little "slice of life" exchanges between characters. And, yes, I love the "speechifyin'," too, particularly when it's Andreas delivering the said speech. He's an incredible talent, and wow, what a voice! It has oft been said of him (by women here and on other forums and newsgroups), "I could listen to him read the phone book." I second that emotion. (But -- ah! -- if only the phone book reading could be done in private somewhere, with maybe just a few candles, a nice bottle of wine, the right sort of wardrobe malfunctions....)

I liked most all of the dialogue between Mac and Bo in 'A View From the Gallery'. Another one from that episode that I liked was when Delenn explained to them that the lifepod they were going to put her in would suffer an 'unfortunate accident'.

JMS can't write dialogue? Yeah, right. Fish don't live underwater, either.

Sometimes it seemed that the criticism of dialog had to do with a stylistic choice made by JMS. I seem to remember his saying at one point that his concept was that at the time of B5, society had moved more towards formality and was reflected in the speeches and so forth. Personally, I like the choice and often wish that kind of swing might start in our time.

              I likes good speakin'!

And what a great job by the actors, too! Can you imagine auditioning for a typical guest appearance and being given that many pages? No wonder they took it on their own to rehearse so much!

Those accusers are out of their freakin' mind. Simple as that. ;-)

Good point, I'd forgotten that. At the same time, he didn't homgenize (sp?) his characters. He wasn't afraid of accents or dialects which I think was one more of the many layers that made us believe in the characters.

They were great! I'd enjoy seeing them at a convention some day.

O.K. One of my favorite exchanges :

"Excuse me, I need to see Draal."

"Oh, Draal is very busy! Have had four ground quakes on other side of planet. Damage to weather control system, to great machine."

                    "Zathras!"

                    "Yes?"

"What the hell are you doing here?"

"Zathras work here. Zathras were born here. You work up there, Zathras work down here. You dress like that, Zathras dress like this."

                    "That's not--"

"Just covering all possibilities. Zathras does not want you being confoosed. Bye."

"Hey! Wait a minute! You are not supposed to be here. We left you a thousand years in the past."

"No! We have never met before. But Zathras very pleased to be meeting you."

                    "No, we have met."

"No. Oh. No, noo. No no. You did not meet Zathras. You met Zathras. There are 10 of us, all of family Zathras, each one named Zathras. Slight differences in how you pronounce. Zathraas, Zathras, Zathras.. You are seeing now?"

                    "There are ten of you?"

                    "Yes! Well, nine now."

                      Zack's finest moment :

"Don't you ever go away? Haven't you caused enough trouble for one lifetime?"

"It's a pleasure to see you too, Mr. Allan. Where can I find captain Lochley? I should check in with her."

"She's busy, you can check in with me. Card... So what is it this time, Mr. Bester? Hunting out freedom-fighters, pulling wings off flies, annexing Sudetenland?"

Two of my favorites aren't in the normal series - not that anything there isn't golden - but from the In The Beginning movie. The moments in Londo's throne room, even though the kids don't actually say much... implies so much with every little word and gesture and inflection that I can't help but love every scene and the flow of dialogue there.

Then of course, there's the great conversation between Dukhat and Delenn, where she's asking about his odd shipments... and that moment where she uses his own words against him, with a cat's look like she just ate the sweetest canary.

I'd quote or paraphrase, but I can't quite get the gist of it all.

I liked how one definitely got a sense of the little girl's personality even though she didn't speak until the end.

Something along the lines of: "I didn't say anything then and I'm not saying anything now." and Delenn responded along the lines of "I'm saying even less than you."

Which reminds me of the conversation between Delenn and Neroon where they complimented each other "after a fashion". I think verbal sparring might be an art form among Minbari.

                            This is all paraphrased:

                            Boy: Are you the emperor?

Londo: See this? This is the seal of the Centauri Republic. So either I am the emperor or I am in a lot of trouble. Or both.

                            ...and later...

                            Londo: What do you want?

Boy: I want to hear a story.

                            Senna: (protests)

Londo: No, it's okay. He did a lot better with that question than I did.
