  • Legend Of The Rangers

I see LOTR on these boards and my first association is always Lord of The Rings. *giggles*

But speaking of Legend of The Rangers I have ordered and it is coming to me in the mail. I am a little bit nervous, not because I've heard it's terrible, but because it is the very last B5 show/movie that I have left to watch.

I think there may be a few comics I haven't read yet, and I've only read the trilogies and canon books. I've heard Clark's law is canon, but haven't read it yet. I imagine if I get desperate enough I may read the non canon novels too, but I hear they are all really really awful, so maybe not.

I need to try writing b5 fanfiction but I've never tried for B5, and I'm not sure that I can.

But anyway, anyone have any thoughts or feelings about any of the subjects mentioned here, esp LOTR?

Me, too! Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I don't want to repeat anything yet, if you haven't watched it yet, but I complained about it quite a bit 2 years or so ago. Go in expecting it to be bad and you may actually come to enjoy it.

Sound advice. Thank You I figure it's still B5 universe and it has Andreas Katsulas, so it can't be entirely horrid.

Well, it is a matter of perspective. I would put it against many things and it would be clearly superior, any Syfy production of the week for example. But in the B5 universe, I just don't know. I'd say better then what happened to Ko'dath but worse than any other episode of B5, including (fill in blank with your least favorite episode).

It's kind of like equal to being a Spoo Rancher. Yes, I think that's it.

Contrary to many, I *liked* the Rangers movie quite a bit. Yeah, there's a phrase in there that's repeated ad nauseum but I was quite sure (and JMS verified it) that there was a reason for that.

Mainly I liked the characters. They all had their own individual 'look' and characteristics and they had a good chemistry together - particularly the Captain and his First Officer. I would have enjoyed seeing more of them.

I enjoyed it, too, and didn't think it was horrible at all. I think it had a few problems, but I chalk that up to the fact that it was a pilot. You can find past threads that discuss it a lot and I definitely put in my 2 cents then.

Once you've watched it, feel free to bring up your own thoughts, and I'm sure a nw discussion will ensue.

Regardless of it being promoted as such, I can stand LotR a little more if I don't think of it as a B5-movie like ItB or ACtA, but see it more as a pilot for a never-made separate spin-off (which it was in reality) - a show set in the same fictional universe, but not that connected to the original show.

Having said that, I have to agree with Jan on some points, some of the characters were likable and developed okay, but all in all I really belong to the "it's terrible"-faction, because of so many things that I dislike about it, that I will not repeat here because this has been done by me and others many times.

But of course I hope you'll have some fun with it, Delenn_of_Mir! Looking forward to your thoughts!

Some of the characters had potential, but as a film it is simply awful. Easily the worst thing ever to come out of the B5 universe (not counting non-canon productions).

I know a lot of people feel that way, but I'm not among them. I loved the film, with one exception - the scream. But I can overlook that easily enough.

It's a fun movie, filled with interesting new characters (and one intimately familiar to B5 fans), great effects, perfect music ... and lines that you just know are setting up plots that would have been paid off in the series years later.

That's one of the things that's bugged me in past discussions about this movie. It seems that an awful lot of people thing that JMS suddenly went stupid rather than assuming that he was going somewhere with the items in the movie. After the intricacy of B5, I'd've thought there'd be more of an inclination to wait and see what he planned.

I don't know. The aspects that strike me as stupid don't have to do with things not being explained, but with either not fitting the B5 universe we know or simply being extremely silly.

In the B5 universe, JMS doesn't do individual stories. Ever. Everything he does is, in some way, connected to some other part of the whole.

Whether it's "I'm looking for something" or the former crew, or the servants of the Hand, it's all building up into something more, something that would have been paid off in the series.

I may be misremembering, but I seem to recall JMS saying that he set LotR about halfway between the end of B5 and the beginning of Crusade, so that (assuming it went to series), in about two or three years, they could catch up with the crew of the Excalibur, connecting things yet again.

You know, I'm going to have to find some time to watch this again. It has been a very long time, and I'm having trouble remembering details.

What a drag it is getting old!

I love debating this movie, as been the case in many other threads. Personally I like the movie because of the numerous possibilities that could've been.
For those who were heavily critical of this movie (as much as I respect the opinions of others), they may forget that this was a Pilot Movie of a possible new series. There are very few Pilots that I know of where it's a home run. It takes a while for the actors to discover and realize their characters. One of my favourite examples of this is Encounter at Farpoint with Star Trek the Next Generation where Picard stands up and yells out something like "Turn off that damn noice" with regards to the Red Alert. That Pilot wasn't exactly the greatest, but I gave that series a chance and some of my favourite episodes of that series is in seasons 3&4.
This is why I get frustrated with networks who cancel various shows, even before they have a chance such as Crusade, Firefly and many others. Legend of the Rangers, in my opinon is yet another example of something that could've been really great but not given a chance.

I'm still anxiously waiting for it to arrive in the mail, but good things come to those who wait, right? I'm glad to hear that some fans did enjoy it. For me it's not just the Babylon 5 show itself, but the entire universe that JMS set up that I fell in love with. Even if I did fall in love with Delenn the most.

So yeah, still waiting, very excited .......... Will come back to post as soon as I've watched it. Looking forward to a new discussion!
