<Believe me...it's not just the gay guys. You say you have no problems with gay people, but given how you singled us out and got a bit pissy, you seem to have some.>

I singled you out because, in my experience, I have not seen the same type of overtly sexual comments from lesbians.

<Believe me such language and jests are commonplace among all of my friends, both gay and straight. You see, no one was actually suggesting rape, it's the sarcastic irony of the joke. >

Such language and jests are also heard from SOME of my friends, although usually they are 'faggot' jokes, and not meant in the spirit of fun. BTW, I find the word 'faggot' offensive and do not use it in conversation. Is it possible that no one in your circle of friends, both gay and straight, or their friends or families, have experienced rape? If so, you are VERY lucky.

Even in the best of circumstances, such subjects lack humor. If you find it fun or funny, perhaps YOU should send such comments as PMs.

Both of you go to neutral corners now, okay?

I'm declaring the conversation *over* and you can now return to the thread topic or drop out of the thread altogether.

Consider this the obligatory post where people call on Jan for declaring the discussion over, and questioning why she's appointing herself moderator, and consider this also the obligatory counterreplies saying that if we should have a moderator it should be her, but not only her, as well as the obligatory flames and counterflames that the situation requires for nominations and counternominations for moderators.
This will of course be interweaved by posts that ignore the request to stop the discussion about (arguably crude) gay jokes, with much arguing for freedom of expression and much misunderstanding about homophobia.
And of course in the process there will be more mentions about using the Private Message feature, and the Ignore list feature.
And in the end both off-topic discussions will be dropped, either by agreement or by burnout, and whether the thread goes back to its original topic (whatever that was) or to any of the side-topics it devolved into.
And many are likely to say its best not to have actual moderators and leave this forums as self-moderating as always.
Let's assume someone reminded us all of the truism that in the internet you have to take everything with a grain of salt and give everyone the benefit of the doubt and never assume that when they say something they meant it the same way you would have.

So consider this a summary of all that potential discussion and let's have none of it.
Such... is the respect paid to science that the most absurd opinions may become current, provided they are expressed in language, the sound of which recalls some well-known scientific phrase

After discussing it with someone wiser than I, it's been pointed out that there was a post early on referencing rape, which I had forgotten about. I didn't think twice about it, as I knew that it wasn't serious, but upon reflection, I can see how it could be taken under other viewpoints. For those of you who were offended by it, I apologize.

It's also been suggested that it was that topic, and not the flirting, that was causing problems, so I withdraw my earlier comment.

Not 'offended by the gay stuff'. Offended by thinking rape is a joke.

You're right, Light Storm. I've had the problem all my life, and you're not the first one to tell me that.

No more from me on that subject.

                        WHOOOOOOOAAA!

Goddamn people. All of this anger over a little joke?!

Jan has asked that I edit my original post...well, I do apologize to deelsee7 for the rape joke, as stated before it was not intended to be serious in any way.

My offense has come from the anti-gay sense I've gotten, which really upset me. As for rape, I've been emotionally raped for years by straights, and yet I take the word as power to me and make light of it in order to render it powerless.

I've also done the same with such words as f**, fa****, aids-w****, etc.

I really do apologize for my joke deelsee7 if it upset you.

That said, I will not edit my original post. Posts are like life, you can't go back and just erase what is said, it would be pointless now. Had deelsee7 PM'd me quietly on the QT, I would've edited the post when no one was looking...but now it would be like the old saying, "fixing the barn door after the horses come home." So, the post stands. I have, however, apologized for the joke.

There was no "discussion" of rape as a joke. I was one little line between friends. The singling out of gay men is what pissed me off. I know many straights who've made just such lewd and/or harsh jokes.

Bottom line, if I offend someone, PM me and say something in a nice and kind way, I will most likely apologize for it. But, again, I will not censor myself because something I say as a "gay man" might offend.

It's a little thing called free speech, besides the fact that I am not Lyta here, I have no way of knowing when what is a joke in my view could possibly offend someone...at least until that person tells me they were offended in the afore mentioned manner.

Now, that said...drop it! The one who said it has apologized (now three times). No sense in attacking. I was stating my point in my original response, now I've hopefully clarified it.

Since this has been between deelsee7 and I, I would like to recommend that it be left between her and I and not the whole forum.

On that note, deelsee7, if you wish to talk about this further with me...feel free to PM me and I'll be more than happy to talk as adults, just us and work this out. The rest of you...enough...back to topic!

Something about hundreds of servants leaping to change hundreds of light bulbs at their slightest whim, I think.

Seems to me there used to be a whole series of light bulb jokes but that's the only one I recall.
