  • What-what-what????

From JMS' last newspost, this small unimportant bit of information slipped in:

and even though they've now grossed about
half a BILLION dollars on the B5 dvd's to date...
Considering that the entire series run cost about 100 million $, this is about as great as news come. I think we can look towards a good budget for TMoS

Its funny, up until this past week, every store in town offering B5 dvds for sale - all of them - had no copies of Season 4. All the other seasons were there, except that one.

It sounds like they had sold out so Warner Brothers had to make some more. Reprints are always popular with manufactures (afterwards).

The TMoS budget was fixed in advance, something like $40 million. However the information could be used to get a good marketing budget and a large number of theatres to open in.

Where did you get that information Andrew? It's nothing JMS has said so what is your source?

It is the rumour that has been going around. The studio may have upped the figure.

Andrew, please quit smoking crack..it's seriously f*@king up your sense of reality on everything.

Internet rumors are like opinions, and we all know what those are like.

Some arbitrary asshole says online that they've "heard" a $40 million figure and next thing you know, everyone says that that's the budget.

Unless you work for WB and know for sure, or JMS states such, I don't buy it one iota.

So take your little budgetary figure and blow it....

              well...nevermind.

Andrew...your leaps of logic are worse than those in a Godzilla movie.

Besides, I don't know that JMS was actually quoting any real figure. While I'm certain that B5 has done phenomenally well on DVD, better than WB or we could ever have hoped for. I'm not sure that JMS wasn't making a cliched statement.

              I could be wrong.

But Andrew, please...keep the leaps in logic to yourself.

JMS actually discussed a B5 feature costing about $35M, but that was back in 1998.

Nevertheless CE, your response borders on flaming (no pun intended).

That is probably what I am remembering.

Costs can go out of date in 4 years.

The B5 tv movies produced so far cost just a tick under $3 million.

We could almost certainly do a high-quality theatrical feature for about $35-40
                  million.

The average going price for a feature these days is $55 million.

By now, not only is inflation at work, but also the fact that all the B5 infrastructure is gone. No more sets, costumes, props, Netter Digital (which was formed to save money when Foundation's prices started rising) and all of its assets, graphics files and everything are gone. Granted, a lot of this stuff would have had to have been re-engineered for the big screen anyway. That theatrical plywood and stipple paint we all love so much wouldn't have passed muster at the multiplex.

At the time, JMS was probably assuming given his track record with B5, that WB would want him to do a feature along the same lines as the show - quick and under budget - to guarantee a recoup of investment. JMS could probably have squeezed that meager $35-$40MM and made it look like $75MM. But with the success of the DVD sales, and WB's recent knack for big budget successes, they may be taking a different tack with it.

I just wish they'd tell us something.

                        Yessir.

Oh, and my flaming of Andrew comes from other discussions in other threads where he has also...how shall I say...lept to some rather wild conclusions.

My hope is to tone him down somewhat, and help him find his way back to reality.

Yes, JMS mentioned that cost years ago, but, as pointed out, inflation is a bitch. I would predict at the least a $70 million budget.

Thanks for quoting me. I appreciate it.

As for the dinner, sorry no. I just finished regurgitating mine.

And I'll happy to supply the flowers, for your funeral : D
