  • Awaiting News and Pondering...

With the sad passing of Jeff Conaway and the passage of time for the wonderful remaining cast, I find myself less vehemently opposed to the concept of recasting the roles. I admit I can't imagine anyone replacing Londo or G'Kar, but I found when the thought entered my head this time, the concept as a whole was far less unimaginable than I previously found it.

I know it is something us B5 fans find especially hard to imagine, perhaps as we were deprived of a big movie featuring the cast at the time when they were best placed to deliver it, but are we now reaching the point where the use of the original cast could come at the expense of telling the best story?

I'm still not sold on the idea of recasting, but my negative reaction is not as strong as it used to be.
How long do we hold out the hope of a story featuring the original cast, or do we abandon with sadness the original characters for new tales in the universe we love so much?

I feel more and more that what I love is the story, not the universe. Not that the universe is bad or anything, it's part of the story - but what I love most is the story of Babylon 5, and that story has been told.

[Edit: but then, I loved The Lost Tales, so....]

As JMS has said, "Andreas is gone...and G'Kar with him, because no one else can ever play that role, or ever will."

I don't want to see G'Kar recast, and thanks to JMS making the right call (IMHO), I have complete confidence that I'll never have to worry about that.

          Amy,
So long as jms is alive, I am also confident that no one else will play GÆKar besides Andreas Katsulas. Likewise, it would be unlikely so long as the majority of the original fan base for Babylon 5 is alive. However, Warner Bros. probably has no compunction against recasting GÆKar.

They can do that next century, when I'm no longer around. <g>

So long as you, jms, Jan, I and many other like minded individuals are still drawing a breath, G'Kar will not be recast.

I thought I made it clear I Could not see either G'Kar or Londo recast personally. It was more that I surprised myself that last time I considered this in any depth was around the time of the big movie rumours that stated the Studio wanted to bring in big names over the original cast. I could not even imagine it.
Now though,G'kar aside, I can't say I feel as strongly against it. As the cast ages, it becomes harder to give them credibility in stories about the characters at the time of B5.
That said, I am not sure I could buy into any one replacing the main cast, so does this mean I abandon all hope of a B5 movie that would excite me, or just of one featuring the original characters.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. I know that G'Kar would never be recast.

End of the day, its much less about whether or not G-kar would be recast, more about is there anything CONCRETE happening with regards to a future in the franchise....
