I too prefer WETA to ILM now. Since I saw what they are capable of with LORD OF THE RINGS. Just as a side though regarding merchandising ( here we are, no ACTUAL movie to see yet and we're already talking about merchandising!) - WETA's 'sister' company is called SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES. They do a good range of movie related items ranging from ALIENS to MONTY PYTHON ( and - of course - LOTR) and their stuff pretty good. I have all of their 12" BOND figures as well as may others. As I understand it, the Sideshow team work from the same drawings and specs as the FX teams. This is how they keep their quality so high - and boy! They do at that.

It used to be that seeing the ILM name attached to a movie meant that you were about to enjoy something just a bit special. To me, now, and after 2 new STAR WARS movies...it just seems to be an exercise in self-congratulatory-aren't-we-clever back slapping. Shame...

      Thanks for update CE

I might slightly prefer ILM because they have done space based CGI. And they might do better blue screen work etc. But i'm equaly happy if they chose WETA.

I must admit that i am REALLY looking forward to this now.

But I must admit I am slightly concerned for JMS's health. If B5 nearly killed him ( by his own admission ) what will this do to him?

                *That's* a puzzling sentiment.

To me, the LOTR flicks are as equally full-up with snarky, wink-wink "riffs" and in-joke cutesiness as anything else any other FX house happens to put out. My wife and I went to see The Two Towers on opening night, and during the whole flooding-of-Isengard sequence, she turned to me -- rolling her eyes -- and said, "That looks soooo fake..."

WETA don't shit gold every turn at bat, and ILM still puts out some virtuoso work -- some virtuoso non-Star Wars work -- more often than most of the Lucas-handicappers seem to want to give them credit for.

5 years of constant stress, crushing responsibility, very little sleep and the occasional exposure to the 'wall of death' almost killed him. He's had several years of working to his own schedule now, so should be able to handle the relatively short period of creating The Memory of Shadows.

B5 nearly killed JMS because he would be working non-stop 20/7 (or sometimes 21/7) in writing whole seasons himself and executive producing at the same time, with new episodes filming in a weekly schedule and post-production of others going on at the same time, all with the constant self-imposed compromise of not going over-budget, and the inescapable responsibility of being the only one with the creative vision behind it all which required him to have the final word in way too many details.
                    Quite stressful I'm sure.
Add to it the self-imposed compromise of corresponding with fans through the newsgroups cutting into his sleep hours...

With TMoS there should be no urgent writing concurrent to filming, and I'd guess that the filming schedule for a movie could be more flexible with a bigger budget, and the bulk of post-production might not be until filming ends.

I guess CE could give more details on that... I'm just giving a (self-)educated guess.

But I don't expect this to do anything to JMS health beyond making him loose a few more hairs.

I agree. I have seen claymation that was more believable than the ents. Gollum, on the other hand, was amazing. WETA has its hits and misses, just like ILM. Both are capable of doing what we want to see for the film, IMO, and I like others am a bit surprised that WB is willing to pay the freight involved in hiring either of the heavyweights.
I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone .. our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit .. that the part of me that is going .. will very much miss the part of you that is staying.

I suspect that the costs of hiring Anyone to do the FX are about the same.
FX is hugely labor intensive and the computers cost a bundle.
Anyone who is going to make that investment is going to charge accordingly.

I doubt ILM is regarded as so much better as to command a Huge premium.
A premium, yes, but Warner can calculate very precisely how much extra Ticket Revenue the ILM name is worth and they are unlikely to pay one penny over that amount.

And, of course, the reason for inviting Both houses to bid is to invoke the word "Competiton".
Another factor that will help them bargain for a better price...

I'll vote for WETA. JMS posted this exchange just over two years ago:

Subject: Re: ATTN JMS: I want your secret
                          Date: 08 Aug 2002 02:38:08 GMT
From: [email protected] (Jms at B5)
                          Newsgroups: rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated

This hectic schedule you were on was why I felt bad about pestering you to visit the WETA guys. I knew they wanted to meet you, and I knew they were also very busy, but Daniel found the time to go to one of your panels. It was so funny to see how excited he was when you finally did turn up at the booth, and the fact that he brought his Gathering/In the Beginning DVD all the way from New Zealand made me realize that even though the WETA guys helped make a brilliant movie, they are just as much fan geeks as the rest of us.

Thanks for doing it, though. They'd really like to find something we can do together, and I'm in the same boat, it'd be great to work on something, so we'll see what we shall see. It'd be cool, since we're both lovers of sagas, to see what we could come up with when we combine resources.

Which is great, as IMDb is supposed to be definitive, not just another rumor site.
IMDB is not authoritative, it mostly relies on individuals, including fans, for its information. The site is riddled with errors hoaxes and sneaky self-promotion. (Some of the "in production" listings are submitted by film makers hoping to raise money to get indy projects made, for instance. )
