  • Oh, the Inconsistencies

Watching The Gathering. Just noticing all the differences and inaccuracies. True, I know the pilot script/notes were different and then everything evolved later. Some things were changed by budget, and other things just changed by JMS.

The Zocalo has a sign that says Bazaar.

The obvious makeup changes for Delenn and G'kar.

The weapons, not the PPGs we know.

    The remote recorders that disappeared.

Londo being blackmailed by G'Kar about evidence of his grandfather committing atrocities againt the Narn. Like that would matter to most Centauri.

Peter Jurasik still working on his accent. Andreas had his down though, but he didn't really have an accent.

G'Kar, when trying to ally with Delenn, mentioning the Minbari as the oldest of the 5 federations. Oops, that would be the Vorlons.

The Vorlons. Supposedly being prepared to go to all those steps, sending all those ships, threatening to blow the station, because Valen was accused of attempting to kill a Vorlon?

    Beep Beep!

    A few things ...

1 - The "remote recorders" didn't disappear. They are shown later on, including the episode "The Illusion of Truth" in season 4, when one of them keeps bumping into Lennier and he head-butts it.

2 - Not much was known of the Vorlons at the time. It's quite possible G'Kar thought the Minbari were the oldest.

    3 - The accent ... Come on ... that's kind of petty.

4 - You're remembering part of what happened in the assumed Vorlon attack. The part you're forgetting is that Sinclair became Valen, then went back in time and worked closely with at least 2 Vorlons on B4 ... Those Vorlons would know everything Sinclair/Valen knew ... As such, they would want to preserve the timeline, including this bluff in The Gathering. Sinclair remembered it happening, so the Vorlons would need to make sure it happened again.

I'm reading through about 12 years of usenet and other forum-postings by JMS(via this site's frontpage).

I have read several comments by jms about the difference between the pilot and the actual series. He was very much aware that there were inconsistencies but then again: there was a gap of - I believe - six months between airing the pilot and starting work on the series, so it was inevitable that jms would improve on the basic B5-concept.

Also : they had to make it work as a series (reusable props etcetera), which is something completely different from making a pilot, so you tend to do it right the first time because the same stuff will come back to haunt you if you don't.

I absolutely agree with you that there are quite a lot of inconsistencies between the pilot and the series. But they can be explained other that saying that they did not pay attention(not that you are saying that btw). I would say that they paid too much attention to the series...

I was going to say that is circular logic, but it has to be, and it works.

              As JMS noted on 1/10/1994,
              The dustbuster guns are history.
I don't think he missed them. As someone noted, it was a "refinement."
I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone .. our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit .. that the part of me that is going .. will very much miss the part of you that is staying.

                    B5 continuity versus Trek continuity

I think those B5 *fans* that were always whining about minor B5 continuity problems should take a long HARD look at the current state of Star Trek and those running that franchise that literally thumb their noses at Trek continuity...and the fans who complain about it.

Did you know that Berman and company are thinking of *re-imagining* the Trek universe? Besides Enterprise?

At least JMS attempted to correct things that didn't work whenever possible. But if you don't have the extra money to go back and correct something...

Also, considering B5's budget compared to Trek's, which franchise has a better continuity record and listens to the fans, huh?

The Nitpicker's are needed to battle the morons at Trek, since most of us are fans of many genre shows. Or is it that B5ers are just less forgiving of glitches? And many Trekkers don't care- they'll just buy anything with a Trek label slapped on it. $10.00 for Star Trek toilet paper!

                    Visitor from another time-space-distortion-anomaly...

It's worse than you think...Shatner may appear as Kirk on an upcoming ENT ep. They are in the money talking stage.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

Just to make it clear; isn't Kirk supposed to be very young at that stage ?

Or would it be just a "minor" inconsistency that in Enterprise Kirk is in a wheel-chair and looks 100 years old and after 20+ years (?) he has the look of a teenager.

Way to go Berman. Maybe Clark Kent should make an appearance in Enterprise. Just think of the boost it would give to Trek franchise.

Berman really needs to have a fatal car accident for the franchise to ever reverse its fortunes.

Trek does not care about their audience. They know they will lap up every moment of thoughtless rubbish.

I stopped watching Trek after TNG.

DS9 - rusty old space station miraculously is near a WORMHOLE
Voyager - the adventure of Captain Midget and the Misfits.
Enterprise - proof that if GR wipped his nose on toilet paper they would have turned it into a series by now ( wait a minute - they have.... See the above 3 )

It has about as much Science to it as TELETUBBIES.

WARP DRIVE - give me a break.

How do they stand up without floating away?
Because the acting is so wooden they can nail them to the floor.

<<DS9 - rusty old space station miraculously is near a WORMHOLE>>

An interesting opinion on the Star Trek universe, but DS9 was NOT located near a wormhole. In the pilot they MOVE it to the wormhole.
