Er, Aisling, other Christian denominations don't have monks.
Well, you're technically correct in that it's likely they were meant to be Christians in DoFS; but I hasten to point out to you that not all monks are Christian, e.g., Buddhism has monks.
Originally posted by colonyearth Ummm....we don't even have any clue if this new show has been announced as of yet. And yes it is a new show. JMS said so:
Given that it's a new show, seasons have already been announced by the Nets, and JMS is only just now mentioning it...there is a good chance that this is a show set for mid-season replacement or next season and it is still in development. Especially considering how much else is on his plate right at the moment, I don't see him trying to run a show right away.
Therefore, we probably have heard nothing on what this new show is from anyone. So guessing which one it is is most likely futile.
And no one said this new show is SF/Fantasy. There is no reason to assume so, and JMS himself would probably be upset to find his fans see him as another form of a one-trick pony (something he hates the thought of being seen as).
At least, that's my take on it.

Well, I was just basing my comment on the fact that that I believe JMS mentioned in the post that he was trying to see if it would fit in with everything on his plate for this year. Specifically-
We still have to negotiate a deal, and work out how that will interface with the stuff that'll be going on later in the year, but fortunately the start date for the series should work out, at least at this point.
Also at the recent upfronts, where the networks announce all their new shows, they usually mention most of the mid-season replacements they have lined up as well as the new fall shows. I seem to recall a paucity of genre entries.
But you'r e right in stating that we may all be off base assuming that it's a genre show to begin with...
but I hasten to point out to you that not all monks are Christian, e.g., Buddhism has monks.
Which is exactly why I hastened to limit my comment to Christian sects - because Buddhist monks, with whom, I assure you, I was familiar - were irrelevant to my point.
And I stand corrected on the Greek and Easter Orthodox monks. They are much less visible in America than Catholic ones and easy to overlook.
Andrew - the Anglican still have actual monastic orders? I'm not talking about archaic bits of costume that resemble monastic robes, but actual orders of monks that live under the usual rules. I always thought that was one of the things the C of E specifically rejected, and which didn't survive ol' Henry's dissolution of the monestaries and the final break with Rome. If the Episcopal Church in America ("Catholic Lite") has any monks on this side of the Pond they keep them very well hidden.
It is rather funny to see that people can get as bogged down in monkdom as in the rank issue!
For all we know, these monks could have been awaiting recognition by Rome, Georgia! There has been, after all, a Big Burn and then, what, 500 years of time passing so there need be no necessary close ties to anything we have right now.
I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone .. our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit .. that the part of me that is going .. will very much miss the part of you that is staying.

Yes the Anglican Church still has monks and nuns in England.
Henry VIII's catholic daughter Queen Mary re-introduced them.
ok guys the last 3 pages are full of nothing but wveryone saying this religion has monks, and this one, and this one...ad nauseoum...
ok ok look i laugh reading them,,it IS comicalyou have to admit, but comeon guys i think amost 3 pages of post adding on monks is quite enough..I am sure JMS has the definitve answer and if he sees it doesnot interfere with soomething he is workin on(hint to his veiled comment on the possibility of new B5 books), then he will let us know..
on another note, can anyone tell me where i can get the most reliable B5 bible, I am attempting an amateur B5 novel and want it to be as accurate as possible.
Also, i know i have made several posts on this my first day, i have no intention of stepping on peoples toes. I take life with a smile..i always remember the Russel Crow line in "Gladiator"--actually a goute from Marcus Aurelius--"Remember, when Death smiles on you, sometimes all you can do is pick up your sword and smile back"

The actual Babylon 5 Bible as used by the writers is now out of print although you may be able to get one on ebay. For a description of the episodes try "The Babylon File" books 1 and 2 by Andy Lane, publisher Virgin ISBN 0 7535 0049 3.

The only 'Official' B5 bible was issued in the first season and never updated.
thanks guys--as withmost of you I have been a fan since "The Gathering" first aired. I also have follwoed JMS' works into the comic field. I wonder if Marvel has given sny thought to letting him do some X-Men one-shots..I think he could really do it some justice..
I will take your advise to heart.
One more question, who would I talk to regarding writing thisnovel? Who has the pubishing rights now? Is it still WB?
Any help would be rgeatly appreciated..

<<One more question, who would I talk to regarding writing thisnovel? Who has the pubishing rights now? Is it still WB?>>
Yes, WB owns the rights to B5 and Del Rey, the Sci-Fi/Fantasy division of Random House is the publisher. As for who to talk to...let's just say the old rule applies...don't call them, they'll call you.
As with Star Wars novels, they pick who they want. They are not even allowed to read your "submission." My advice is to establish yourself in the writing field, maybe earn a degree (they always like degrees, even though some authors with multiple doctorates can't write worth shit) and in ten years or so you may just get a call.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.
boy you sure live up to your name Za'ha Dum..
seriously, that is what I figured, I have been doing some little work..maybe sometimee soon you will see my name in carbon..hahh hah
i really do appreciate your help..I am workign on my degree as we speak..so don't give up..viva la b5..

The Episcopal Church is Catholic Lite except the prayers are said by married priests in English.
Why, what language do the unmarried ones use?
Or are you under the impression that Catholic priests still say prayers in Latin? If so, your information is about 40 years out of date - which somehow doesn't surprise me. The Mass has been said in the local venacular since the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s. In the English speaking world Catholic priests say their prayers in English, surprise, surprise.
I'm still not sure how Catholic Mary's reintroducing Catholic monks and nuns into a most definitely not Anglican church has anything to do with how they ended up as part of the C of E after Elizabeth undid all her work and set England firmly on the path of Protestantism, but I'll take your word for it that the two events are somehow connected.

You know Ranger 6 and 7/8, it's a fact of life in internet communities that threads drift off topic. And in this case, we haven't even drifted off the show, really - we're still talking about monks, "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars," and the possible denomination they represent.
I mean it's not like we've devolved into the question of abortion, or US politics, or whether we liked Rowan or Martin better.
I've noticed that in some of the non-Usenet B5 online communities, people are positively anal about such things as thread drift, not having more than one thread devoted to a particular topic, etc. etc. So many rules! Really, I'm just here to relax, and having good conversation with other B5 fans on topics that at least _start out_ as B5 topics really fits that bill for me.
dont get me wrong Aistling, that is what i figured, i was just ointig out a funny..Granted i keep my usenet strictly limited.Imean you only have so long i a day to read a thread, but when i find a group i really enjoy, i like to point out stuff like this just as i would in a real conversation.. I mean i could talk B5 for hours, but then i would turn into a zombie eyed- mutant with an aversion to sunlight..
I love it that i was able to find out about this group..and thanks for making me already feel like part of a slightly dysfunctional family..just like my real one --scary..
anyway, i guess since it is 1am here, i otta take a nap before i hit the real world.huh?
later
