Who's your favorite guest star on B5?

    Who's your favorite guest star on B5?

    i am sure a topic similar to this has been discussed in the past. but it seems kinda slow around here so i thought i would start it anyways because frankly i am new here.

    my favorite guest star on B5 would have to be Walter Koenig as Bester. i know he was a semi-regular but since he was never listed in the opening credits i think we can safely list him as a guest star.

    i thought he really did a great job with Bester. and i much prefer him as Bester to Chekov on Star Trek. with Bester he could stretch his legs and you could see his full range of performance. it was similar to how George Takei was so great as the evil Sulu in Star Trek's Mirror, Mirror.

    so i am going with Walter Koenig.

    what is your choice?

    I agree completely. All the guest actors did great jobs, but I would prefer Koenig/Bester, too. His presence contributes definetly much to the entire show.

    I also liked Ed Wasser/Morden and Lord Refa (can't remember the actor's name at the moment, sorry).

      William Forward was the actor who played Lord Refa.

      And I have to agree with Keffer here in saying that Walter Koeing was really the guy who stole the show quite often in his depiction of Bester.

        Ah, I suspect this would be one boring thread where all would agree on number one choice...

        Walter Koenig as Bester was indeed the best guest.

        Ed Wassser as Morden was no slouch, but Bester was a more rounded character. I'd guess that if B5 had featured some of his background he would be more of a contender for me (e.g. something similar to the dialogs with Anna Sheridan in The Shadow Within, the parts where he talks about witnessing his wife and daughter die could have been a great opportunity for Ed Wasser to show another face of the character).

        Lord Refa was also great, but Bester was best... however I remember that comment from JMS about killing Refa, the actor asked if he had done a bad job

        Yes, it was with the actor who plays Refa that I had that conversation. He was initially bummed out, figured I was doing what I was doing in "Rock" because I wasn't happy with his performance or something. So I pulled him aside and explained the situation, and indicated that we'd likely use him again as an alien character, under prosthetics. If he hadn't done such a good job, this wouldn't have happened, because no one would've cared about the character.
        He did a god job and see what he got for it...

        But speaking of Number One: she of the Martian resistance (Marjorie Monaghan) was also a very good guest star, but we only saw little of her.

        And we saw much less of Brother Theo but who can forget him... or Zathras (and his brother Zathras)... I could go on...
        Babylon 5 was salt and peppered by way too many good secondary characters played by talented "guest star" and talented "plain guest" actors.

        P.S. The fact that Alfred Bester was named in homage to the Science Fiction writer and his excellent novel "The Demolished Man" makes it another reason I like that character.

          I'm going to go off the board a bit and say that Majel Barett-Roddenberry was my favorite. She is such a classy lady and such a fine figure of television sci-fi!

          Her presence on the show was perfect.

            Well, "supporing cast" is I think the term for recurring non-regular charactors, and Bester was the best one outside Neroon.

            As for actual guest actors, I think I liked either Wayne Alexander as Sebastian, or Michael Ansara as Elric best. It is hard to decide....
            I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone .. our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit .. that the part of me that is going .. will very much miss the part of you that is staying.

              Really? I thought her appearance was remarkable mostly for her monotonic delivery. I thought her charactor in TNG was absulutely dreadful, but she did a fine job acting in that role, so i was surprised at how "stiff" she was in B5.

                Well, there's a reason why Wayne Alexander appeared in about five roles throughout the series run. I really enjoyed him as Sebastian (as I did the whole episode), and as Lorien.

                Aside from that, the usual run - Koenig, Wasser, Forward, Choate, Monaghan, Teague, London, Winfield, Zimbalist Jr., Dourif etc.

                One guest star though that I thouroughly enjoyed, and that hasn't gotten the attention he deserves is Mark Schneider's Wade. He had a terrific personality.

                    my favorite one episode guest star would have to be paul winfield(sp?) .. I liked his portrayal as Dr. Franklins father

                    another good guest star was the General who helped with the breakaway movement of Babylon 5 .. his name escapes me .. but I remember he was supposed to be on another episode .. but he was doing something else .. so they killed him off .. and had a Major do what he would have done

                      oh i really liked Morden too! Ed Wasser was perfect for that role! by the way, he was in the pilot ep as a bridge officer on the space station.

                      Michael Ansara was great as Elric as well! i always loved him from his roles as an indian in westerns to of course his Klingon roots in Star Trek.

                      and i also enjoyed that female politcal officer who came in to help setup Nightwatch and try to seduce Sheridan as well! she was pretty hot!

                      General Hague was also very good and it was too bad he ended up committing to DS9 and not being able to fulfill his B5 duties and that is why Major Ryan had to step in to take up the slack...i liked Ryan too.

                      and i also liked Phil Morris. not so much for his portrayal of an Earth Force officer, but more so for his portrayal of Jackie Chiles in Seinfeld! LOL

                          Also, the illusion of G'kars father in Dust to Dust.

                          Truely soul-wrenching performances on both parts!

                              At first I found Morden to be an intriguing character. Now after watching through season 3, after all the horrible things hes done I just want to see him die. Die Morden die!

                              (for fear of spoilers I wont be checking into this thread again if I can help it)

                              Bester on the other hand, is a character that you love to hate, once you accept his evilness. At that point, I can't help but grin with him when he's being overly obnoxious or downright saddistic! Though admitedly when I saw what he did to _______, I did kind of hate him for a while.......

                              ********Incoming Spoilers*******

                              Dont read this if you havent read the Psi Tril!!!!!!

                              After reading the second book in the Psi Corp tril it is kind of easy to see how Bester ended up as he did. For starters, he had a pretty !@#$ed up childhood. Being unknowingly manipulated by the Corp from birth, never having any friends his own age (for the most part) must have been very dehumanizing. Which naturally made it easier for him to see advancement through the Corp as his only real purpose or goal in life.

                              After betraying his closest friend to be ''reprogrammed'' by the Corp (the flesh crawls) , just about permanently killed whatever human values/morals he had left. Really for someone to have gone so long without that, well we see the end result in B5.

                              (I loved the scene where Bester attempts to convince Garibaldi hes not a monster, where he talks about having a wife and kids and taking walks in the park, to wit Garibaldi claps, then says - with a straight, sincere face - ''Close. For a second there, you almost had me convinced you were human.'')
