  • Where's the Ranger.

I'm lazy, but still have a question that needs answering.

When was the first appearance by a Ranger? Not the whole big Marcus type introduction, but when did one first pass on screen?

Is there a list of Ranger appearances anywhere?

Yeah, well, the rent is cheap, the pay is decent and I get to make my own hours.

The first time they are mentioned is in season 2's "Coming of Shadows" when Sinclair's message is delivered to Garibaldi -- but I remember seeing at least one in an episode prior to that. Don't remember which episode (it was a second season episode though) -- it was a background character wearing the pin.

It's the first appearance I'm looking for. A backround appearance would count in my book.

Done some searching and found these JMS posts:

That was the first time we made a *point* of them...but they'd been
lurking in the background in many scenes in season two episodes leading
up to that. I don't recall that we seeded any into the background in
        season one, however.

To pick one background shot, as I recall, there was a ranger at the
zocalo bar at one point in "Long Dark."

Watch the B5 movie In The Beginning. It was released between seasons 4 and 5 or somewhere in that area and gives a pretty good history of the B5 universe including the Rangers which includes a scene that took place during the Earth-Minbari War. If you haven't seen this movie but have seen the rest of the series then sit back and be prepared for a revelation, it's an eye-opener.

We walk in the places no others will enter.
We do not break away from combat.
We stand on the bridge and no one may pass.
We do not retreat whatever the reason.

Youl're right. ItB is one of the great moments in B5.

I own two copies of it. In the movie set, and on the ITB/Pilot dvd.

So far I'm going with The Long Dark as the first ranger appearance

Oh, okay, I thought you meant chronological appearance not screen appearance. Just got through watching the first four seasons a few days ago. Had I known about this, I would've paid more attention. Oh well.

Jeffrey Sinclair was not only the first Human Ranger, he became their leader because of prophecy. It happned not long after he was reassigned to Minbar as the Earth Ambassador.

For details, check out "To Dream in the City of Sorrows" by Kathryn Drennan. It's a great read.

And if I remember correctly, Sinclair was the one who founded the Rangers after he arrived 1000 years into the past with Babylon 4 as Valon, the Minbari not of Minbar.
