  • In the Beginning

Before I begin, please forgive me if this have been covered before. It's my first day.

When reading the novelisation of "In the Beginning", I came to a realisation. After the first peace initiative between the Minbari and the Humans failed, both races seemed to consider the matter closed. However, it was surely in the Humans' interest to try it again.
The reasons given for Delenn's reluctance were that she was now on her own, and that she couldn't get support from the Grey Council. She had, in her possession, a visual recording of Dukhat labeling the Humans as a vital part in the future conflict with the Shadows. Shouldn't this be enough to convince the rest to end the war?

Also, did JMS always intend for Londo to be the one responsible for the destruction of the peace mission?

    Hello everyone, by the way.
So, let us not be blind to our differences - - but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to means by which those differences can be resolved. And if we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal.

That's a good point and I'm not really sure. Did she really have the recording, though, or did the Vorlons make it and it wasn't compatible with Minbari tech (yeah, I know, I'm reaching there...)? We can pretty much tell that the Vorlons weren't anywhere near ready to allow themselves to be revealed yet. I also think that at that point she wasn't at all ready to go against tradition and take initiative on her own so the loss of first Dukhat and then Lenonn may have taken the wind out of her sails.

Also, did JMS always intend for Londo to be the one responsible for the destruction of the peace mission?
I don't know about 'always' but an item I have in my collection seems to indicate that, no, that wasn't the plan originally. Quite the reverse, in fact.

In a Summary that JMS wrote for 'In the Beginning' it states that:
He attempts to restore his own position in the Royal Court by brokering a peace treaty between the Minbari and Earth...an attempt which breaks down at the last moment with deadly consequences.
    As for G'Kar:
He doesn't care whether humanity stands or falls, as long as he can sell us weapons for use in the war, giving his government some badly-needed funds.
JMS has said that he tries to leave himself open to doing things differently (on reason why he hates to outline) and this seems to be one. I think that Londo's guilt even so long after the fact makes him an even more tragic character.
